Dream - Gargling is one of the movements in performing ablution. However, gargling has important rules that must be observed by Muslims. Quoted from islam.nu.or.id, gargling is recommended by simply putting water into the mouth. However, it is recommended to exaggerate by putting water into the mouth, swirling it around, and then spitting it out. But what if it is done while fasting? Does it invalidate the fast?

Quoted from islam.nu.or.id, the best or most perfect way to gargle is by using three scoops of water with the palm of the hand. Each scoop is for gargling, and the rest is for istinsyaq or inhaling water into the nose. By using this method, water can be saved. This is explained in the following hadith: "Then Abdullah bin Zaid gargled and inhaled water from one scoop with the palm of his hand. He did it three times." (Muttafaq 'Alaih)

Regarding this matter, it is explained as follows: "As for the person who is fasting, it is not recommended to gargle excessively for fear of invalidating the fast, as stated in the book al-Majmu`" (Zakariya al-Anshari, Asna al-Mathalib Syarh Raudl ath-Thalib, Beirut-Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah, 1st edition, 1422 H/2000 M, volume 1, p. 39). According to Imam Shafi'i, what is meant by excessively gargling during ablution is to take water into the mouth, swish it around, and then spit it out.

While gargling outside of ablution, for example, for brushing teeth is allowed as long as it is not swallowed. If swallowed, then the fast is invalidated. This includes gargling for religious reasons, for example, to clean bleeding gums.
