A team of researchers from Poland and Peru discovered a tomb containing 22 mummies, including mummies of children, newborn babies, and adults in the city of Barranca, Peru. The uniqueness of this finding is that the mummies were wrapped in cloth. In addition to the cloth wrapping the bodies, artifacts such as pottery, tools, and food remains were also found at the burial site.
The translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any HTML tags is as follows: Location of this archaeological site is situated on the outskirts of Barranca city, Peru, on Cerro Colorado hill, Pativilca Valley. Although known to researchers for several decades, this place encompasses four hills that contain pre-Columbian structures, and the construction and function of these buildings are still undisclosed.
The archaeological team from Peru and Poland
"In 2022, an archaeological team from Peru and Poland involved in the 'Los Valles de Barranca' Research Program initiated a new research project at the site. Led by Peruvian archaeologist Plinio Guillen Alarcon, and team members including bioarchaeologist Lukasz Majchrzak from Krakow, the project involves students from Jagiellonian University and St. Mark University in Lima."
Originating from the 19th century
"In the previous year, researchers determined that this complex originated from the second half of the 19th century. At the top of the highest hill, they discovered a ruined burial site dating back to the 3rd millennium BC."
This year, the work that revealed 22 intact graves is part of a research project funded by the National Academic Exchange Agency. Dr. Justyna Marchewka-Dlugonska from Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University led the excavation.

"This is the bodies wrapped in cloth and plant materials, which in archaeology are called burial bundles. Through the examination of human remains, among the layers of this cloth, we find pottery, tools, and religious objects."

The discovered burial bundles, six of which are intended for adults, while the other 16, located somewhat further away, are designated for children with a possibility of various age ranges.
"Until now, high child mortality is a common occurrence, especially after they have finished being breastfed. This is not always reflected in the archaeological record, as children are often not buried with the same treatment as adults. However, the number of children is sometimes greater than that of adults. In the context of Cerro Colorado, what is noteworthy is not the quantity, but the methods of making and placing the bundles of children."
"As explained, the bundles were placed at the same depth, aligned with the heads of deceased adults. All were in a horizontal position, while the bodies of the adults were arranged in a fetal position with their upper and lower limbs folded beneath their chests."
to English while preserving any HTML tags is:
"The bodies of adults are arranged vertically, giving the impression that they are sitting. All the bundles have a similar outer appearance, wrapped in thick fabric and tied with string."
"At this point, it is difficult to provide a single interpretation of these findings. Perhaps the entire community simply buried their children in this place."
"The confusing part is the fact that these are clearly children no older than two years, judging by the length of the bundles, some of which are definitely newborns or infants. There may be certain reasons why the older children are buried in a different part of the cemetery," said Lukasz Majchrzak."
"Until now, the team has only explored an area measuring 20 square meters. The researchers uncovered a bundle containing the bodies of newborn babies that were buried."
“ We underwent tomography on two other bundles, so we know that one child is slightly older, and the other is also a newborn,” said Lukasz.
The translation of "Gambaran para dewa dan hewan" to English is "Depiction of the gods and animals".
The fabric found in one of the opened bundles has a geometric pattern decoration. Meanwhile, other bundles are likely to contain depictions of animals and deities, as suggested by Majchrzak. The materials used to wrap the body are believed to have utility in the afterlife.
"In the vision after his death in the Andes, someone travels for a year until they reach their destination. So they need food. We even found corn and other plant materials that could not be identified in several bundles,"
clearly Lukasz Majchrzak.
"However, unlike the graves in the Andes, researchers explain that the number of containers found in each bundle is only about four to five."
The research team plans to analyze the next burial bundle, estimated to date from around 1000 to 1100 AD. These initial findings will be validated through radiocarbon dating.
