The skull is part of a collection of artifacts stored at the Archaeological Museum of Agios Nikolaos on the island of Crete, Greece.
The Agios Nikolaos Archaeological Museum in Crete, Greece, displays a skull that still has a gold crown attached to its head. The skull is approximately 2,500 years old. Although the flesh around the head has disappeared over time, the gold wreath remains intact and attached to the skull. Additionally, the most surprising discovery is the presence of silver coins inside the skull's mouth, believed to be a symbol for Charon in Greek mythology, who is the ferryman of Hades, carrying newly deceased souls to the underworld.
The significance of this discovery becomes clearer when further investigating its history. The skull was found in the ancient city cemetery of Lato, paving the way for amazing archaeological discoveries throughout the region.
Lato is an ancient city in Crete, and the ruins of this city are located about 3 km from the village of Kritsa, one of the oldest and most beautiful villages in Crete. This city was built in an amphitheater style on top of a rocky hill known as Kastellos, surrounded by olive groves and situated at an altitude of 375 meters.
The following 'Bahasa' text translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The city-state of Doria was founded in a strategic location overlooking the Mirabello Bay, situated between two peaks that serve as the acropolis of the city. Lato, likely named after the goddess Leto, appears to reflect its rich history through ancient coins that were minted featuring the highly revered goddess Eileithyia of Lato."
Although the possibility of this city existing before the arrival of the Dorian people, its main ruins date back to the Dorian era, especially in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Lato Etera, the city's harbor, or known as Lato pros Kamara, located near Agios Nikolaos, remained in use during the Roman rule period, even though the city itself was destroyed around 200 BC.
Museum of Archaeology Agios Nikolaos, which started operating in 1969, has been an important witness to the archaeological wealth of Crete. Although currently closed, this museum was previously a storage place for over 1,500 pottery pieces, as well as the oldest gold and bronze discoveries in Crete. This extensive collection includes valuable artifacts from various locations, ranging from Malia to Zakros.
Although the museum is currently not operating, this valuable collection has been transferred to other institutions in Crete. This is done to ensure that the archaeological heritage of Crete remains accessible and enjoyed by the community. With the intriguing athlete's skull as the main focus, the narrative of the city of Lato continues to be enriched by a historical legacy that spans from the prehistoric Minoan period to the Roman era.
