Valanga nigricornis, or commonly known as wood grasshopper, is a type of insect that inhabits the Southeast Asia and Pacific Islands region, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, as well as southern parts of Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Translated from Bahasa to English while preserving HTML tags: "According to Pertanian.go.id, wood grasshoppers usually breed in teak forests. However, if there are no teak trees, these insects will switch to surrounding plants. Therefore, wood grasshoppers are categorized as pests because they can attack agricultural commodities such as coffee, cocoa, coconut, corn, banana, mango, kapok, cotton, sugarcane, cassava, and various other commodities."
For the owners of teak trees, wood grasshoppers are considered a blessing because they help control caterpillar pests that usually damage teak leaves.
"In the Gunungkidul Regency area, this insect is fried and becomes a typical dish of the region."
During the dry season, a number of residents of Gunungkidul who are involved in agriculture switch to catching grasshoppers because there are no jobs in the field of agriculture. The catching process is done using a pole, considering that grasshoppers tend to perch on tall teak tree leaves.
"In the rainy season, woodlice often appear in agricultural land for palawija crops. Generally, farmers capture these woodlice at night with the help of additional light sources, considering that woodlice eyes are less effective in dark conditions."
