Dream - The Muslim community in Indonesia is eagerly awaiting the government's announcement regarding the beginning of the fasting month of Ramadan in 2024 or 1445 Hijri. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Hijri calendar celebrated by Muslims around the world. During this month, adult Muslims are obligated to observe fasting, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
"Muhammadiyah has determined that the beginning of Ramadan 1445 H falls on Monday, March 11, 2024. The start of fasting was decided by the Tarjih and Tajdid Assembly of the Muhammadiyah Central Board. However, the dates for the beginning of Ramadan and Syawal have not been determined by the Government and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Both parties will determine the start of Ramadan and Syawal by observing the crescent moon directly, which will then be decided in the Isbat session."
Although in the calendar published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, 1 Ramadan is estimated to fall on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. However, NU and the Government will hold monitoring of the crescent moon for the determination of 1 Ramadan 1445 Hijriah on March 10, 2024.
The results of the determination from NU and the government can differ from what has been determined by Muhammadiyah. Differences in the initial determination of Ramadan and Syawal often occur in Indonesia. Why is that? To find out the reasons why Muhammadiyah starts fasting Ramadan earlier than NU and the government, let's directly see the following explanation!
"Differences in Method"
Based on research conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the difference in the initial determination of Ramadan and Shawwal that occurs in Muhammadiyah and NU is caused by differences in methods of determining them. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) chooses to use the method of rukyat, which is observing the new moon directly, while Muhammadiyah chooses the method of hisab, which is calculating mathematically.
"Muhammadiyah with Hisab Method"
Quoted from the official source of Muhammadiyah, the use of the hisab method to determine the beginning of the qamariyah month has a strong foundation. According to the expert in Falak Muhammadiyah, Oman Fathurrahman, several indications of verses from the Al-Quran show the use of the key term hisab which means calculation.
"He is the one who makes the sun shine and the moon radiate, and He has determined the positions for the moon's journey, so that you may know the number of years and the calculation of time."
Al-Quran Surah Yunus verse 5
Setting the beginning of the month can be done through calculations by using hisab. Oman Fathurrahman explains that by understanding that the moon and the sun revolve regularly based on calculations, we can predict, measure, and establish accurately and precisely.
"NU with Rukyat Method"
According to the report from NU Online website, the initial determination of the qamariyah month uses the rukyat method based on the belief that the texts related to rukyat have the nature of worship. There are Quranic texts interpreted as commands to perform rukyat, such as verse 185 of Surah Al-Baqarah regarding the obligation to fast in Ramadan, and verse 189 of Surah Al-Baqarah regarding the determination of the timing of ahillah.
In addition, there are at least 23 hadiths that serve as the basis for the method of rukyat, which are narrated by various narrators such as Imam Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, and others. NU believes that these fundamental principles of rukyat are understood and practiced by the companions, the tabi'in, the tabi'ittabi'in, as well as the four major madhabs, namely Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali.
Mutual Respect
Regardless of the differences in the initial determination of Ramadan and Syawal, it is advisable for Muslims in Indonesia to approach it wisely and respect each other. These differences are based on strong fiqh foundations. Therefore, we should not criticize each other. It is better to respect the differences while maintaining the harmony and unity of the Muslim community.
