A mosasaurus fossil from Japan was identified by researchers. This fossil is comparable in size to a great white shark and is believed to have lived around 72 million years ago in the Pacific Ocean. The mosasaurus features a very long rear fin, with a long, fluked tail. Another uniqueness lies in its dorsal fin that resembles a shark, possibly for turning quickly and precisely in the water.
"Professor Takuya Konishi from the University of Cincinnati, along with other research team members, has described the mosasaurus in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology."
The text translated to English while preserving the HTML tags is as follows: "This Mosasaurus is named Wakayama Soryu, taking its name from Wakayama Prefecture where its fossils were found. Researchers gave this name, which means "blue dragon," with a special meaning referring to Japanese mythology that connects dragons with good fortune."
"In China, dragons create thunder and reside in the sky. But they become aquatic creatures in Japanese mythology," he said.
The translation of "Foto: TAKUMI" to English is "Photo: TAKUMI". The HTML tags are preserved as there are none present in the text.
The translation of "Berasal dari Sebuah Sungai" to English is "Originating from a River."
This finding comes from the Aridagawa River in Wakayama in 2006, discovered by Akihiro Misaki. At that time, Misaki was actually searching for invertebrate fossils, such as ammonites, but instead found an interesting mosasaurus fossil buried in a layer of sandstone.
"According to Takuya Konishi, this is the most complete mosasaurus skeleton ever found in Japan or the northwestern Pacific region."
"Although Konishi has studied mosasaurs throughout his career, this specimen from Japan exhibits unique features that challenge a simple classification understanding. One of its characteristics is the rear fin, which is longer than its front fin, even longer than the head that resembles a crocodile."

"Mosasaurus was the primary predator in the prehistoric oceans around 100 to 66 million years ago, competing with Tyrannosaurus rex and other Cretaceous dinosaurs. The mass extinction involving mosasaurus occurred when an asteroid struck the area that is now the Gulf of Mexico, similar to the dinosaur extinction."
"Compared to Other Mosasaurus Fossil Discoveries"
"Wakayama Soryu displays several features similar to the mosasaurus found in New Zealand, as well as other features that can be compared to the mosasaurus in California."
The research team classified this specimen in the subfamily Mosasaurinae and named it Megapterygius wakayamaensis based on its discovery location. "Megapterygius" refers to "large-winged," referring to the large fins it possesses. Another prehistoric marine animal known as the plesiosaur used paddle-like fins for movement, but did not have a long steering tail.
The translation of "Spekulasi Peneliti Mengenai Sirip Besar" to English is "Researchers' Speculation About the Large Fin".
Experts speculate that the large size of the front fins may assist in quick maneuvers, while the large back fins may provide the ability to dive or surface. Like other mosasaurs, the tail of this mosasaur is used to provide strong and rapid acceleration when hunting for prey.
"This is a question about the extent to which these five hydrodynamic surfaces are used. Which one is for steering? Which one is for propulsion?"
"This opens up the entire question that challenges our understanding of how mosasaurs swam."
The translation of "ujar Konishi" to English is "said Konishi."
The translation of "Memiliki Sirip Punggung" to English is "Having a Dorsal Fin."
"In addition, it seems that Wakayama Soryu has a dorsal fin, as indicated by the orientation of the neural spines along its backbone. The orientation of these spines closely resembles that of harbor dolphins, which also have prominent dorsal fins, as found in this research."
"For 5 years, researchers worked to clean the sandstone matrix around the fossils and created a copy of the mosasaurus to document the orientation of the bone skeleton before the excavation process."
