"Dream - The tragic fate experienced by Ruqia Haidari, a woman from Afghanistan who was forced by her mother to marry a man. After six months of marriage, Ruqia Haidari was killed by her husband."
The mother, Sakina Muhammad Jan, forced her daughter who was 21 years old at the time to marry Mohammad Ali Halimi at the end of 2019.
"This marriage was not Ruqia's desire, but Sakina forced her and accepted a dowry of Rp150 million for her youngest daughter's marriage. After six weeks of moving to Perth, Australia, Ruqia was killed by her husband after experiencing domestic violence in January 2020. The 26-year-old man was then sentenced to life in prison in 2021 after being found guilty of murdering his wife by slitting her throat."
"In court, Judge Fran Dalziel recounted how Sakina forced her daughter to marry despite Ruqia having rejected it."
"Are you my mother or am I your mother? I can make decisions for you. Do you think it’s up to you? No matter what, you have to listen to me, your mother," said Sakina to her daughter, as reported by news.com.au. Sakina herself is part of the Hazara community, a minority ethnic group that often becomes a target in Afghanistan. They spent 13 years in a refugee camp in Pakistan before settling in Australia in 2013."
"Before marrying at the age of 13, Sakina had never received formal education, perhaps thinking that she was making the right decision for her daughter. However, this action clearly violates the law in Australia. Judge Dalziel emphasized that forced marriage is an illegal act."
"
It must be made clear to everyone in our country that forced marriage is against the law. You are abusing your power as her mother to override her wish not to marry Halimi,
said the judge.Sakina refused to sign the court documents regarding her early release from prison. According to her, if she did that, it would mean accepting responsibility for her daughter's death. Sakina does not feel guilty.
""I did not make any mistakes, I cannot accept that. I cannot be imprisoned," he stated.
