"Story of Queen Dugem's Repentance"
"Previously, this woman lived a dark life under the dazzling disco lights. Now she has repented and wears a hijab."
"Previously, this woman lived a dark life under the dazzling disco lights. Now she has repented and wears a hijab."
Dream - This is the story of a convert from Russia. Her name is Alena Katkova. After going through a winding path, the woman who was born in Siberia, the northernmost region of the former Soviet Union, finally found guidance and decided to embrace Islam.
The story began when Katkova moved to New Zealand in 2008. There, she pursued her education at The Auckland University of Technology (AUT). In addition, she also worked as a call center operator.
When she first arrived in New Zealand, she did not believe in any religion. She was an atheist. Perhaps that is the appropriate term to describe Katkova, who indeed had no religious affiliation.
"After some time, everything is different. The shift from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere apparently has an impact on Katkova's heart. Moreover, after meeting Muslim students in a country that is very heterogeneous with various backgrounds."

Since converting to Islam, the life of the 29-year-old woman has changed. She admitted that since embracing Islam, she has become wiser personally. "Before converting to Islam, I used to go to parties and clubbing, but everything has stopped," she said. Not only did she convert to Islam, but Katkova also started wearing a hijab to cover her aura as taught by her new religion. Since wearing the hijab, she feels that she is treated more respectfully by the people around her. "I think I am now more respected."
Katkova is truly comfortable wearing a hijab. She started thinking about changing jobs because she felt that being a call center operator was not the right field for her. "I always thought they would accept me as a teacher."
Katkova also practices Islam obediently. Now she no longer lives a wild lifestyle. She mingles freely with various men. "Islam does not teach hugging or kissing someone who is not a mahram, so I don't do that," she said. Therefore, when she meets other men, Katkova now only greets them. "But with their smiles, they understand and New Zealand is a country that is very accepting."
But, that doesn't mean that Kotkova's migration doesn't come with challenges. Rejection even comes from her own family. \r\n\r\n"And even my sister cannot understand or accept the fact that I am now a Muslimah," she said.
The condition can be understood by Kotkova. Because, in her home country, not everyone gets accurate information about Islam.
"In Russia, society still thinks of Muslims as terrorists because of what they see and hear in the media," said Katkova.
