Dream - The use of gadgets on children must indeed be controlled. If not, it can cause negative impacts.
Listen to the following story of Rasidah Hanum Lehon. The mother from Malaysia shares the story of her child whose eyes are cross-eyed due to excessive use of gadgets. According to Rasidah, her eldest child, Nik Nur Soffea Amanda, was actually born as a normal child. However, her eyes became cross-eyed when she was two years old.
"When that happened, I gave him a mobile phone according to his wishes. I didn't know day or night. Every time he played, it was more than two to three hours non-stop," said Rosidah, quoted from Berita Harian, Monday, May 6, 2024. Giving gadgets to children is indeed one of the effective solutions to keep them quiet. That is also the reason why Rasidah gave a gadget to her child. However, she didn't realize the negative effects on her child."
"Imagine in one day, Amanda looks at her phone three to four times. For me, that's the only way to make Amanda quiet so she can put her younger sibling to sleep. It's the same when we eat out, I will give Amanda her phone so she stays quiet at the dining table," Rasidah revealed."
However, Rasidah was extremely surprised when she saw Amanda's crossed eyes while talking to her. "I remembered her eyes being crossed when talking to me. But after more than a week, I noticed that her eye condition remained the same. I continued to go to the nearest health clinic and the doctor referred Amanda to the hospital," she said.
In the hospital, the doctor stated that Amanda's eyes were experiencing blurriness. However, Rasidah was not convinced with the diagnosis because she did not see any signs of her child being nearsighted. "The cause of her eye problems is the cellphone. Her eyes are too focused on gadgets, making them lazy eyes," Rasidah said. She couldn't accept the fact that her child's eyes were crossed. Rasidah was very sad. "But I admit that all of this is my fault," she said.
Doctor suggests that Rasidah's child wears glasses to correct her eyesight. She is grateful that her child's eye condition, who is now nine years old, is gradually improving.
Despite its negative impact, Rasidah did not stop using gadgets for her child. She felt that technology still needed to be used, especially for preparing school work. "But its usage is limited, not like before, she doesn't use it without knowing the time. At first, it was indeed very difficult but I was determined and had to persuade Amanda a lot. Now, she understands why I limit it," said Rasidah.
He urges other parents not to give their children gadgets for a long time, especially using them when it is dark.
