Instead of using screening, the detection of mental disorders in Indonesia still uses manual methods, namely questionnaires. Based on the Riskesdas 2018 data, there are three mental disorders that are most commonly found in Indonesia. The first is emotional mental disorders (anxiety and bipolar) at 9.8%. Then, depression is recorded at 6.1% and severe mental disorders (schizophrenia) at 0.2%.

"Cost of Mental Disorder Treatment"

Professor Irma Melyani Puspitasari, M.T., PhD, of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Padjadjaran, estimates that the total annual direct cost for mental health disorders in Indonesia is approximately Rp87.5 trillion.

The number represents an estimate of the prevalence of mental health disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders over the course of a year. The estimated annual direct costs for schizophrenia amount to Rp1.5 trillion, Rp62.9 trillion for bipolar disorder, Rp18.9 trillion for depression, and Rp4.2 trillion for anxiety disorders.

In 2018, approximately 470 thousand people in Indonesia experienced schizophrenia. Furthermore, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders were experienced by around 19 million people in Indonesia, assuming all patients adhere to medical treatment within a year.

In the research conducted by Prof. Irma and her team in 2020, it was found that the average cost of treating schizophrenia for one year is around Rp3.3 million. Meanwhile, for bipolar disorder, it is around Rp17.9 million, depression around Rp1.6 million per year, and anxiety disorders around Rp1.1 million. This estimation is based on the Burden of Disease (BOD) or cost of illness. In the cost of illness study, there are several costs that can be included, namely direct costs, indirect costs, and intangible costs.

"Direct costs usually consist of medication costs, doctor consultation fees, and administrative costs. Indirect costs refer to productivity loss due to not working and also include intangible costs."
