Dream - Supermarket in Australia, Drakes, recently started testing the installation of location trackers through GPS system on expensive meat. This unusual preventive measure is necessary to reduce losses due to the actions of thieves.
Supermarket networks in South Australia are becoming very frustrated with meat theft. They are currently testing a security system by attaching GPS trackers to expensive meat cuts that are usually wrapped in transparent containers.
The GPS will be able to track the position of the meat when it is taken unlawfully. Polycarbonate boxes are usually used to prevent theft of high-value items in supermarkets. But Drakes supermarket is the first in Australia to use them for meat.
"Technically, high-quality meat like Wagyu qualifies as a luxury product. Drakes' action is believed to be the most appropriate security measure."
The text translates to: "The words of director John-Paul Drake to ABC News, quoted from Oddity Central."
"We are talking about meat that costs between $50 and $100 per kilogram, so this is the high-end meat that we have," he added.
Drakes claims that meat worth US$12 million is stolen from its network of 67 supermarkets in South Australia and Queensland every year.
The company hopes that this new GPS tracking device will significantly help reduce those losses. The trial has entered its third week with a total trial time of 13 weeks.
"If successful cases of meat are proven, they plan to expand its implementation throughout Australia. Polycarbonate containers may not appear strong, but according to John-Paul Drake, these containers require considerable force to break or forcibly open. It is much easier to simply pay for the product and take it at the cashier. Although the current global cost of living crisis has contributed to an increase in theft incidents, Drakes believes that expensive meat often becomes the target of criminals."
