Dream - Microsoft adds to the list of technology companies that have carried out layoffs. Not half-hearted, the employees who were furloughed at the beginning of 2024 were as many as 1,900. The layoffs, announced on Thursday, January 25, 2024, apply to the Microsot Gaming division, namely Activision Blizzard and Xbox.
According to Reuters, this reduction represents about 8 percent of the overall Microsoft Gaming division and most of it will occur at Blizzard.
President Activision Blizzard Mike Ybarra and Chief Design Officer Allen Adham will also leave the company. Meanwhile, a survival game previously announced by Activision Blizzard has been canceled.
This news emerged a few months after Microsoft closed a deal worth US$69 billion for Activision Blizzard.
"Previously, at the beginning of 2023, this company based in Redmond, Washington, United States also carried out massive layoffs affecting 10,000 of its employees."
"The announcement by Microsoft that they will lay off 1,900 video game workers clarifies that even when you work for a successful company in a highly profitable industry, your livelihood is not protected without a voice in the workplace," said the Communications Workers of America (CWA).
Several other large companies such as Alphabet, Amazon, and eBay have also laid off thousands of staff in the past few weeks to reduce costs and increase profits.
As a whole, more than 21,000 workers have been laid off in 76 technology companies in January, according to the Layoffs.fyi tracking website.
