Dream - A man is suspected of stealing money worth US$23,000 or around Rp355 million from three passengers on a flight from Vietnam to Singapore. The man's name is Zhang Xiuqiang, a 52-year-old Chinese citizen, who was traveling on a Scoot plane, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
To CNN, the airline spokesperson stated that they became aware of the theft after receiving a report from a passenger. This incident occurred during a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Singapore on December 16, 2023.
"The cabin crew was informed by a passenger about a suspected theft in the cabin and activated the Airport Police Division," said the spokesperson. "The passenger involved was escorted off the plane by airport authorities for further investigation, and the disembarkation process proceeded as usual for our other passengers," they continued.
According to the indictment sheet read in court and broadcasted by Singapore's public broadcasting institution, Channel NewsAsia, Zhang is suspected of stealing money from three different passengers.
"He reportedly took 3 million Vietnamese dong ($123) from a passenger's backpack, and 510 million Vietnamese dong ($20,950) and $50 Singapore dollars ($38) from another passenger's black bag. He is also suspected of taking $1,000 Singapore dollars and $930 Singapore dollars ($700) from an envelope found in the third passenger's gray bag. The total value of the theft is approximately $23,000 or around Rp355 million."
Zhang has been detained for police investigation. If proven guilty of theft, he could face a punishment of up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
Scoot cannot provide further details regarding this case, but has reminded the crew and passengers to remain vigilant inside the aircraft. "Our flight attendants are trained to be alert and to inform the authorities if there is any suspicious behavior on the plane," the statement said. "We also advise our customers to keep their valuables safe at all times," Scoot's statement continued.
The translation of the given 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags is as follows: "The theft of cabins is a federal crime in many countries and occurs more frequently than most travelers think. In October, the Hong Kong police warned of a surge in thefts on airplanes after discovering a criminal syndicate that stole credit cards from passengers."
In 2019, Cathay Pacific Airways Hong Kong announced strict measures against petty theft of food supplies on board by cabin crew. Meanwhile, a man was arrested in Taiwan in September for allegedly stealing cash from other passengers' cabin baggage on a flight from Tokyo to Taipei.
