All cabin crew and passengers totaling 379 people survived, while five crew members of the Coast Guard aircraft, which collided with the Japan Airlines plane, died. The captain of the plane survived."

According to Channel News Asia, industry sources say that the American insurance company, AIG, is the primary insurer for all policies worth US$130 million, for the two-year-old aircraft that was destroyed in the fire. However, AIG declined to comment.

According to Aviation Safety Network, this is the first global loss for the Airbus A350 aircraft type. The aircraft, which is largely made of carbon composites, began commercial operations in 2015.

"When the collision occurred, the crew took 18 minutes to evacuate everyone from the aircraft and land safely. A JAL spokesperson said that most of the passengers were Japanese, with 43 foreigners confirmed to be citizens of Australia, Sweden, Hong Kong, China, and South Korea."
