Dream - An employee in the financial sector of a multinational company in Hong Kong became a victim of fraud with losses amounting to US$25 million, approximately Rp392 billion. He was deceived by someone pretending to be a company executive in charge of the financial department. Local police said that the fraudster used deepfake AI technology in a video conference. This fraudster brought along several fake staff members, not real humans.

"In a video conference attended by many people, it turns out that everyone (he saw) was fake," said senior inspector Baron Chan Shun-ching to the city's public broadcasting institution, RTHK, as quoted by CNN."
Initially, this worker was actually suspicious when receiving a message claimed to be from the company's financial head based in England.
"He suspected that the electronic message (email) contained phishing because it discussed the existence of a secret transaction. However, the unlucky employee's suspicion disappeared after making a video call. On the screen, another person appeared whose appearance and voice sounded like a colleague that he knew."
Believing that everyone present in the call is genuine, the worker agrees to send an amount of 200 million Hong Kong dollars or approximately Rp392 billion.
This case is one of several new criminal actions. The scammers are believed to have used deepfake technology to modify videos and other recordings to carry out fraudulent activities against their victims.
The Hong Kong police said that they have made six arrests in connection with the fraud. Chan said that eight stolen Hong Kong identity cards, all of which have been reported lost by their owners, were used to make 90 loan applications and 54 bank account registrations between July and September last year.
According to the police, at least in 20 instances, AI deepfake has been used to deceive face recognition programs by imitating the person depicted on the identification card.
