According to Erich Voigt, MD, an ENT specialist from NYU Langone Health, many people hold in a sneeze in certain social situations such as in cinemas, restaurants, or meetings. The negative effects of holding in a sneeze are very minimal, but it is still not a good habit.
Sneezing serves to protect the body from allergens, germs, and irritants. Therefore, it is best not to hold in a sneeze. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or the crook of your elbow when sneezing to prevent droplet spread. Here are five dangers of holding in a sneeze.
1. Damage to Blood Vessels in the Eyes or Nose
Holding back a sneeze can cause damage to the superficial blood vessels in the eyes or nose. Increased pressure can cause the blood vessels to burst, resulting in red eyes or subconjunctival bleeding.
2. Ear Infection
Sneezing cleans the nasal passages from dust, germs, and allergens. If sneezing is suppressed, these substances can enter the middle ear through the Eustachian tube, causing acute ear infection which usually leads to pain and a feeling of fullness in the ear.
3. Fraktur
Although rare, holding in a sneeze can cause a bone to crack. The excessive pressure when holding in a sneeze can harm the body, especially in specific areas depending on where the pressure is directed.
4. Broken Eardrum
Holding a sneeze by closing the nose can force pressure into the middle ear, causing the eardrum to rupture. This can lead to chronic ear infections, hearing loss, and bone infections behind the ear.
5. Sore Throat or Neck
