Drinking water during pregnancy is very important to support the growth, development, and metabolism of the baby. In addition, drinking water also helps with digestion, baby's blood circulation, maintaining amniotic fluid, vitamin absorption, regulating body temperature, and much more. According to Ellen Smead, a midwifery expert at Northside Women's Specialists, Pediatrix Medical Group, if a mother does not drink enough water during pregnancy, it can make her feel dizzy, have headaches, and contractions.
During pregnancy, hydration needs increase due to several factors. Such as physiological changes in the mother's body, increased blood plasma volume, changes in the kidneys, and the growing needs of the fetus.
"Other factors that affect hydration needs include physical activity, heat exposure, and sunburn, all of which can increase fluid loss," said Farnaz Jahangiri, MD, an OB-GYN and assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. It is important to pay attention to signs of dehydration and ensure adequate fluid intake during pregnancy by referring to urine color as a guide."
Not getting enough fluid during pregnancy will increase several risks. One of them is that the mother is more susceptible to urinary tract infections or constipation, and even premature contractions can occur due to lack of fluid in the body.
"Lack of fluids can cause the uterine muscles to contract prematurely, which can lead to cramps or contractions that occur too early before normal delivery (before 37 weeks)," said Ellen Smead. Another risk is oligohydramnios, a condition where there is too little amniotic fluid/water due to dehydration. This condition can be risky for miscarriage, premature delivery, and difficulty breathing in babies. Chronic dehydration during pregnancy is also associated with the baby's birth weight, length, head size, and chest size. In addition, it can make pregnant women feel weak, nauseous, and dizzy. "
The signs of mild dehydration include dark yellow urine, headache, dry or sticky mouth, drowsiness, constipation, dizziness, and contractions.
If the mother feels dehydrated, the first thing to do is to drink a few glasses of water within half an hour. After that, sit with your legs raised.
Always make sure that pregnant women get enough fluid intake. You can use a water bottle with a marker to know how much water is being consumed. You can also use an alarm to remind them to drink throughout the day.
It is recommended to consume fruits and vegetables that are high in water content. Such as cucumber, apple, watercress, strawberry, watermelon, and melon.
