TV emits blue light that is comparable to the sun. The habit of watching TV before bed can delay the release of melatonin by about 3-4 hours after continuous exposure to TV light.

said Susan Malone, Sleep Researcher and Assistant Professor at NYU Rory Meyers College.

2. Stimulating the Brain

It is important to choose the type of content you watch before sleeping, as the brain will continue to process that content while you sleep. "Sad, engaging, or scary content can disrupt sleep quality because the brain will continue to process that content," says Troxel. Emotional activities like that can disturb sleep quality, so watch television shows that can stimulate the brain at night or during the day.

"Turning on the TV can disrupt the sleep cycle, including REM sleep. Scary TV shows can cause bad dreams that often occur during REM sleep," said Troxel. REM sleep occurs about 1 hour in the sleep cycle, and this is usually when detailed dreams occur. Sleep stages that are disturbed by low sound levels can hinder memory consolidation and delay the brain from entering the restorative sleep stage, which functions to restore energy and eliminate fatigue."
