Dream - Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) have become one of the sectors that are continuously developed by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenparekraf RI). Interestingly, these MSME players in Indonesia are dominated by women.
The role of SMEs initiated by women has now become the prima donna of the creative economy industry in the homeland. Of the 60.5% contribution of SMEs to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP), almost 65% of SME actors are driven by the beautiful hands of Indonesian women. One of the interesting SMEs created by Indonesian women is "Rajoet". At the peak of the "Citrapreneur Trophy 2024" award held on Friday, May 31st at Lapangan Banteng Jakarta, "Rajoet" successfully won the first place trophy with criteria such as product quality, uniqueness and innovation of the product, presentation and branding on social media, and considering sustainability.
Rajoet produces bags made from recycled plastic materials. For the materials, they collaborate with a factory that recycles plastic from mineral water bottles, thinner plastic, which is then melted into plastic rolls that will be used as the base material for making bags.
To knit the plastic material, Rajoet empowers 20 housewives in Madiun, East Java. "One of our commitments is to empower housewives in Madiun who used to work in the fields and did not have a permanent job, so we strive to ensure that they have a permanent job by continuously producing products every month," said Genesia NG, as the Co-Founder of Rajoet.
He also explained that the idea of selling bags originated from the interest of the three founders of Rajoet in Indonesian products. While on vacation in Yogyakarta, they noticed that many craft places sell the same items, but there aren't many local tourists who buy those products.
Most consumers of these products are foreign tourists. Therefore, Rajoet has a mission to reintroduce Indonesian products to foreign countries and Indonesians can also be proud of local products because they are not inferior to foreign products. In a month, Rajoet can produce 300 bags with various models and designs with their own level of difficulty. All Rajoet products are also handmade, so they require a considerable amount of production time.
The bag produced by Rajoet is priced at various prices depending on the design and level of difficulty, ranging from Rp99 thousand to Rp2.7 million. Rajoet also accepts custom orders with a minimum purchase of 20 pcs.
Rajoet also sells various accessories and small crochet dolls made of yarn. Curious to see the collection? Dream friends can see and buy Rajoet's products through creative economy bazaars, social media, or e-commerce.
Genesia also shares tips for young people who want to start a small and medium-sized enterprise (UMKM). The initial capital that is very important is self-confidence and creating quality products.
"“First, you have to believe in your own product, because it goes back to the portion where we sell the product, we have to check whether our product is of good quality, whether it has a positive impact. After that, we also have to think about marketing for our product, what is suitable. Don't forget to participate in events like “Citra SEMASA Piknik 2024”. We have participated in that event three times because the audience who came matched the target market and could appreciate it. Finally, don't forget to regularly participate in mentorship,” he said."
In the "Citrapreneur Cup" award event, a total of 20 women-owned micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) received awards and had the opportunity to grow through competency improvement as well as business funds and media worth a total of more than Rp650 million.
"Consistently, Citra has been undertaking various initiatives to empower women. Continuing its purpose, through the 'Beautiful Hands of Citra' program, this time we strive to make a real impact on the progress of women's micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) by collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia and SEMASA to present the 'Citrapreneur Trophy'," said Putri Paramita, Beauty and Wellbeing Marketing Lead of Unilever Indonesia.
