Some people who experience jaw pain may also have a tendency to clench or grind their teeth (bruxism). The jaw joint can also experience clicking or 'click' sounds when opening the mouth too wide, which often occurs while eating, yawning, or laughing.

Various types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Injuries to the jaw due to accidents or the use of braces (dental wires) or retainers (aligners). Habit of clenching or grinding teeth. Some connective tissue diseases that can cause problems affecting the temporomandibular joint.

"Signs and symptoms of TMJ disorder:"

Sensation of pain or tenderness in the jaw. Pain in one or both temporomandibular joints. Pain felt around the ear. Difficulty in chewing or pain while chewing. Pain in the facial area that feels throbbing. Inability or disturbance in opening or closing the mouth. Dislocation or displacement of the disc from its proper position. Damage to the joint cartilage due to arthritis. Joint damage due to impact or other physical impacts.

Avoid yawning, laughing, or opening your mouth wide to prevent clicking. If it frequently happens, clicking, which is a symptom of TMJ, can cause the jaw to fall and cannot be closed again.
