Dream - Usually, strokes are caused by high blood pressure and other risk factors. These other risk factors are often referred to as non-traditional risks, which include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, lack of physical activity, alcohol abuse, and heart disease.
The research published on Tuesday in the American Heart Association Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes journal shows that the higher risk of stroke is associated with younger age under 35, possibly due to unexpected factors.
"Many studies have shown a connection between migraines and strokes, but to our knowledge, this research may be the first to demonstrate the magnitude of the stroke risk that may be caused by migraines,"

"Risk Factors"
Leppert and his team analyzed health insurance claim data from over 2,600 individuals in Colorado who experienced a stroke and over 7,800 individuals who did not experience a stroke to determine which risk factors were most associated with stroke.
This research involves individuals aged 18 to 55 years old, and the majority of strokes that occur are ischemic, which happens when blood vessels to the brain are blocked by blood clots.
"Stroke in Women"
Among people aged 45 to 55 years old, non-traditional risk factors including migraines, blood clotting disorders, kidney failure, autoimmune diseases, and cancer. Migraines rank at the top, contributing to nearly 35% of strokes in women and 20% in men, but its contribution to stroke risk decreases with age.
Researchers were surprised to find that non-traditional risk factors, especially migraines, play a significant role in the development of stroke in young adults. "The younger they are when they have a stroke, the greater the likelihood that their stroke is caused by non-traditional risk factors," said Leppert.
