Dream - Since early March 2024, the cases of dengue fever (DBD) in Indonesia have significantly increased. Quoted from Kemkes.go.id, as of March 1, 2024, there were nearly 16,000 cases of DBD in 213 Districts/Cities in Indonesia with 124 deaths.
Mosquitoes as carriers of dengue virus can certainly attack anyone, both adults and children. In the case of dengue fever in children, it is often detected late and can result in fatal consequences, even death.
Doctor Citra Amelinda, a pediatric specialist, reminds parents to be more cautious. Especially if the child has been experiencing a prolonged fever and it doesn't seem to subside.
Through her Instagram account @citra_amelinda, she reminded the very characteristic symptoms of dengue fever patients. "Fever lasting more than 3 days, not decreasing after taking fever-reducing medication. Fever accompanied by red spots on the skin that do not disappear when pressed, the child tends to sleep and is difficult to wake up," said Dr. Citra.
It also reminds that if there are people around the house or school who are affected by dengue fever, and then the child experiences symptoms of dengue fever, they must be more cautious. In some cases, dengue fever cases require immediate medical treatment.
It needs to be known that this dengue fever disease attacks children more than adults. The cause is due to the immune system factor.
"The immune response of children to dengue virus infection is not yet perfect, making them more susceptible to infection and experiencing damage to blood vessel walls," said Dr. Citra."
"If a child experiences sudden high fever accompanied by one of the mentioned symptoms of dengue fever above, it is best to immediately take them to a doctor. Do not let the child's condition worsen."
Because in this dengue fever disease there is a critical phase, where the body temperature drops which is considered to have recovered even though there is a risk of children experiencing shock (circulatory failure). This is why during this phase, children must receive special supervision and must not be late because it can be fatal. Source: IG @citra_amelinda
