Dream - Bullying cases can occur at any age. Not only among high school students as currently being discussed, but also at the elementary and junior high school levels.
"As parents, of course, we cannot protect our children for 24 hours. Especially when children are at school and start socializing with peers."
It is possible that the child is in a bullying situation or experiencing physical violence from peers such as hitting. In this situation, parents sometimes get emotionally triggered and ask the child to retaliate. On the other hand, there are also those who ask the child to avoid conflict and remain silent.
Apparently, according to Melissa Grace, a psychologist, in that situation it could be a moment to shape a child's mentality and teach them to seek solutions to conflict.
"'Self Protective Behavior' strategy is certainly not the only strategy that can be applied in all situations without exception," said Melissa. According to her, self-protective behavior needs to be taught to children from an early age and started with a lot of discussions at home. It can start by discussing bullying situations that are currently happening."
From Melissa's suggestion, if a child receives a beating or other physical violence, whether jokingly or for certain reasons, and the child doesn't like it, don't immediately ask the child to retaliate. "This option can be interpreted by the child as it is okay to use violent behavior to solve problems or to achieve their desired goals," Melissa said.
"In the future, it is possible that the child will use the same method to handle a problem or to achieve their desires, even with different people or situations. Also, do not consider it normal or common if a child is hit and ask the child not to overreact or just stay silent. Often, parents ignore the child's feelings, even though it is very disturbing."
"In the future, the child may think that they deserve to receive bad behavior from others or the child may grow up as a person who is accustomed to suppressing anger and other negative emotions, just to momentarily save the situation," stated Melissa.
Not just replying or keeping silent, train your child to speak up about things they don't like. Not only to their friends but to anyone, including their own parents. This will greatly train their mentality.
"Train children to have the courage to tell anyone who does something that makes them uncomfortable or unsafe. For example, 'Stop, I don't like it,' said Melissa. If a child is hit and they have already expressed to a friend that they don't like it, and the hitting continues, ask the child to leave the location and find an adult nearby. Train children to provide reports based on the facts they see and feel."
The goal is to ask for help from other adults so that they can act immediately or provide immediate protection for the child. This may not be applicable in all situations, but at least the child already knows what to do.
Not solving violence with violence or staying silent, but seeking the best solution in the midst of an uncomfortable situation requires mental and quick thinking abilities. Parents can train their children by creating simulations at home and having many discussions about bullying, so that the child understands better if they find themselves in such a situation.
