Dream - All pregnant mothers certainly want a healthy pregnancy that results in their child being born in a normal condition. Unfortunately, not all expectant mothers can experience this.
According to research, 15-20% of mothers experience high-risk pregnancies every year. Generally, high-risk pregnancies occur in mothers aged 30-38 years old.
"Actually, pregnancy should indeed be prepared for. A person cannot immediately have a child after getting married. There are many considerations that need to be taken into account," said Dr. Novan Satya Pamungkas, an obstetrics and gynecology specialist from RS Pondok Indah - Bintaro Jaya at the Media Discussion event 'Understanding High-Risk Pregnancy', February 20, 2024, at Penang Bistro Pakubowono.
Pregnancy with high risk usually occurs due to the mother's underlying diseases. Such as hypertension, anemia, and diabetes. Twin pregnancy is also considered high risk, and the examinations conducted are usually more intensive.
In mothers with a history of hypertension or high blood pressure, special monitoring is required. This is because hypertension during pregnancy often occurs and can endanger the lives of both the mother and the fetus if not properly managed.
"Kalau pasien sudah mengalami pusing yang sangat hebat, pandangannya kabur, sebentar lagi biasanya akan kejang. Jadi harus segera ke rumah sakit. Apalagi kalau sudah tau ada faktor risiko tekanan darah 140/90 di atas usia kehamilan 20 minggu. Maka ini membutuhkan pemantauan yang lebih ketat dibandingkan yang lain," kata dr. Novan. Translation: "If the patient has experienced severe dizziness, blurred vision, and is about to have a seizure, they must go to the hospital immediately. Especially if they already know that there is a risk factor of blood pressure 140/90 above 20 weeks of pregnancy. This requires stricter monitoring compared to others," said Dr. Novan."
"In pregnant women, it is important to regularly check blood pressure. For pregnant women known to have a history of high blood pressure or when the results are examined"
"Because often when patients come to the clinic, their blood pressure is usually high, because they have just been active and walking. That's why I often tell them to sit and rest for 15-45 minutes, then recheck their blood pressure, usually it will return to normal. If the blood pressure remains the same, then it is categorized as hypertension," said Dr. Novan.
If the mother already has a history of high blood pressure, this condition falls into the category of Chronic Hypertension. This condition requires special treatment. If left untreated, it can develop into pre-eclampsia.
Preeclampsia is an increase in blood pressure and excess protein in the urine that occurs after 20 weeks of pregnancy. This condition can have fatal consequences, such as destruction of blood cells, increased liver dysfunction, and even severe bleeding that endangers the lives of both the mother and the baby.
"For that reason, it is very important to regularly undergo pregnancy check-ups, both at the doctor and midwife. Especially blood pressure checks."
"If it turns out there are indications of high blood pressure in the mother, it can be immediately addressed for the safety of the mother and fetus. Report by Monica Alycia Mutiara."
