Dream - Sleep is important for everyone, especially children who are still in the stage of growth and development. Often, children have a hard time sleeping and are fussy at night, resulting in a drastic reduction in their sleep time.
It can also be when a child is sick or feeling stressed facing exams or tests at school, making it very difficult for them to sleep. It should be noted that when a child lacks sleep, it will directly have a negative impact on their physical and psychological well-being.
A new study published in JAMA Network found that lack of sleep has negative impacts on the psychological well-being of children. They are unable to perform well in school and experience a decrease in quality of life. Although there have been several studies on children with sleep disorders, the researchers in this study analyzed what would happen if healthy children's sleep was disrupted.
Children involved are part of another study called the DREAM (Daily Rest, Eating, and Activity Monitoring) study. In this study, children undergo periods of restricted sleep and extended sleep for weeks.
Overall, 100 healthy children without sleep problems between the ages of 8 and 12 participated in the 2022 study. The children's sleep time was adjusted to be one hour later than usual (sleep restriction) or one hour earlier (sleep extension).
In both cases, children wake up at their normal time. The researchers asked parents and children to assess the quality of the child's life related to health using various questionnaires.
Research findings reveal that lack of sleep, even for just one week and one hour, can decrease the quality of a child's life. There are significant negative impacts on the child's physical well-being and their ability to cope with the school environment.
Many parents assume it's okay if their child stays up one hour late, maybe because they're busy with school assignments, watching movies, or other things.
"Children's sleep time should be taken seriously and they should adhere to a regular sleep schedule. Poor sleep quality can affect all aspects of a child's life. This includes how much food they eat, whether they are able to run and play with full energy, whether they are attentive during classes, or have sufficient social skills."
It is important for children to get enough sleep every night, according to their age. They should have the same amount of time to wake up and sleep. One of the most important things to maintain the quality and sufficient duration of children's sleep is by turning off all gadgets. The blue light exposure from screens at night can disrupt children's sleep because it can send signals to the brain that it is time to wake up. Source: Times of India
