"Dream - Several areas in Jabodetabek and some regions in Java Island recently had very poor air quality due to pollution. One of the impacts is exposure to lead."
One of the air pollutants is the heavy metal Lead (Pb) produced from incomplete combustion in vehicle engines. A sad fact shows the level of lead in children's blood on the island of Java.
The translation of the text is as follows, while preserving the HTML tags: "Study of Blood Lead Levels (BLL) in children in Java Island conducted by the Occupational and Environmental Health Research Center (OEHRC) IMERI Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) in collaboration with Pure Earth (PE) Indonesia Foundation, shows that nearly 90 percent of children have BLL exceeding the recommended limits of the World Health Organization (WHO). Out of the prevalence of lead contamination mentioned above, 19 children (3 percent) require therapy."
The study was conducted from May to August 2023 on children aged 12-59 months. The results showed that out of the children with blood lead levels (KTD) exceeding 20 ug/dL, 34 percent of them experienced anemia. Developmental Delay Among children with blood lead levels (KTD) exceeding 20 ug/dL accompanied by anemia, 14 percent of them also experienced developmental delay. The effect is that children with blood lead levels (KTD) exceeding 20 ug/dL and anemia are 4 times more likely to experience developmental delay.
Professor of the Department of Community Medicine at FKUI, Muchtaruddin Mansyur, said that KTD in children obtained in this study is an urgent condition that needs to be addressed.
"Delays in handling will affect the quality of future generations due to delays in child growth and development," said Muchtaruddin, quoted from Liputan6.com."
"Muchtaruddin also explained other risks in children exposed to lead exceeding the WHO threshold. They are at a higher risk of developing heart disease and other chronic illnesses."
"The increasing prevalence of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Strengthening the capacity of the health sector to understand and prevent environmental lead exposure and its health impacts should be a priority," he said.
Exposure to lead can also cause birth defects, brain damage, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and others. Lead can be found in nature and used in various types of products around us. Many activities such as informal lead-acid battery recycling in household environments and daily activities related to lead can contribute to lead pollution in the environment.
The researchers noted that lead pollution occurs in soil, water, and air, causing adverse effects on the health of children and adults.
WHO recommends a Blood Lead Level (BLL) of 5 µg/dL as an indicator of environmental exposure sources that need to be monitored, therefore it is advised that BLL should not exceed that level. Meanwhile, 45 µg/dL is the BLL threshold for considering therapy administration.
Budi Susilorini, Director of Pure Earth Indonesia Foundation, revealed that lead is very dangerous for children and adults as well. Concrete steps need to be taken by many parties to address this issue.
"We can be exposed from our home environment. Lead contamination in the environment and its impact on health should be a motivation for us to immediately take action for handling and prevention," he said. Source: Liputan6.com"
