Dream - When the little one starts learning to walk, surely dad and mom are also excited and eagerly awaiting their first steps. When the little one starts walking on their own, that moment becomes very special and touching.
Did you know, Dream friends, that the age when a child starts walking can predict their future success? Several studies have shown that babies who walk earlier may have better memory, attention, and social skills.
Usually, babies start walking between the ages of 12 to 15 months. By the age of 18 months, 75% of babies can already walk independently. Some babies can already walk since the age of 8 months.
In a study observing a large group of babies, babies who start walking at around 10 months of age are categorized as early walkers. Babies who first start walking on their own after 18 months of age may be at higher risk of experiencing delays in fine motor skills, balance, attention, and visual perception when reaching school age.
Sometimes, these children need extra support as they grow. From studies, it is known that babies who are quick in developing their gross motor skills may have above-average abilities in other areas later on.
A study of 599 children in the Journal American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) found that babies who stand and walk earlier at the age of 4 years have higher cognitive test scores.
"Our findings are consistent with longitudinal studies conducted decades ago, which showed that the age at which a child reaches milestones in standing or walking is a predictor of later memory performance in children," said Akhgar Ghassabian, MD, PhD., one of the researchers.
Other research shows that babies who walk earlier can learn language faster. Scientists also observe that communication between babies and parents improves when a child starts walking.
