Dream - Children aged 10-14 begin to enter puberty. Puberty itself, quoted from IDAI.org, is a phase that bridges the time between childhood and adulthood.
This transition phase is marked by various changes both in terms of physical-biological and psychological aspects. The puberty phase must be experienced by every child in order to become an adult.
Puberty in girls occurs earlier than in boys, specifically between the ages of 8 and 13, with an average onset at the age of 10. Meanwhile, puberty in boys is slower compared to girls. Boys begin puberty between the ages of 9 and 14.
Currently there is a tendency for children to experience early puberty, which is when the puberty phase and the growth of children occur faster than they should. This can cause long-term effects. "If puberty occurs too early, the time for height growth becomes limited. The child's psyche is not ready, and parents have not yet provided the necessary preparation," said Dr. Faisal, a pediatric specialist.
"Factors that Trigger Early Puberty"
Quoted from Halodoc, until now, it is not known exactly what causes a child to experience early puberty. However, there are several conditions that are known to be able to stimulate estrogen hormones in girls and testosterone hormones in boys, namely gonadotropin hormones.
Early puberty caused by these hormones is known as normal puberty or Central Precocious Puberty. In rare cases, this early puberty can be caused by tumors in the brain or spinal cord, brain defects at birth, and hypothyroidism.
Meanwhile, early puberty that is not influenced by gonadotropin hormones is known as Peripheral Precocious Puberty. The increase in hormones that occurs can be caused by several diseases or health disorders, such as tumors in the pituitary gland, ovaries, or sperm-producing cells.
Early puberty is also caused by other risk factors, such as gender, where girls are more vulnerable to experiencing it. Obesity conditions can also increase the risk of early puberty.
"Early Puberty Signs"
If a child is suspected to experience early puberty, especially in girls according to Dr. Faisal, it is usually marked by the emergence of growing breasts (breast budding) at the age of 8 and menstruation at the age of 10.
"If menstruation occurs too early, for example at 10 years old, it means that the growth spurt also happens earlier at the age of 8 years old and we are worried. Two years after menstruation or around 12 years old, the growth will start to slow down and eventually stop earlier than others," said Dr. Faisal.
It is important to consult with a child growth and development doctor regarding this matter. This is because there are some girls who experience their first menstruation at a very young age, such as 10 years old or less, and may experience emotional and physical problems. "Most of them actually experience mental and emotional problems and end up being shorter in height compared to their peers, even though they were initially taller," said Dr. Faisal.
