Sudah Beroperasi 700 Tahun, Pasar Ini Jual Calon Suami

"Already Operating for 700 Years, This Market Sells Prospective Husbands"

"The groom candidate will set the cost of dowry that must be paid by the bride's family."

Dream - People usually go to the market to buy basic necessities, such as rice, vegetables, meat, and so on. However, it is different with this market, where men are sold to be married by women. According to Al Jazeera, a groom market in the state of Bihar, India, has been operating for 700 years. The market "sells" prospective grooms who are ready to be chosen for marriage by a woman.

In tradition, the groom-to-be is responsible for setting the amount of dowry that must be paid by the bride's family. This market is usually crowded during annual events.

"It is as if the bride's family can shop for the groom they like if they can afford the required dowry. It's like a market for grooms.""
Local residents say

One of the prospective grooms in the market is Nirbhay Chandra Jha (35). He traveled more than 100 kilometers from Begusarai to Madhubani district in hopes of finding a suitable bride for himself. Nirbhay set a simple dowry of Rp9 million.

Once they have made their choice, they place a Mithila Gamchha, a red scarf, on the selected groom as a marker. Although the groom market in Bihar is not as popular as it was a few decades ago – mainly due to online dating applications – it still attracts thousands of bachelors.

Some of these single women are willing to travel hundreds of kilometers away in the hope of being chosen as a husband and receiving money as a dowry.

Interestingly, India also has a market for women's brides. In Haudati, women brides are available at various prices, depending on their qualifications and skills in managing the household. (x)
