Dream - The port on the northern coast of Jakarta never dies. Boats come and go, constantly moving back and forth. The giant wooden ships lined along the coast seem to be always awake, loading and unloading goods from their hulls and decks. That is the busyness of Sunda Kelapa Port. One of the legendary docks located in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. This old port is also one of the gateways for the spread of Islam in Java and the origin of Jakarta City.

Sunda Kelapa, the Islamic Gateway of Betawi Land

This city has been bustling since the 12th century. Formerly known as Pelabuhan Kalapa, it served as the main gateway to the Pajajaran Kingdom, which was headquartered in Pakuan — now the Bogor region. At that time, ships from all over the archipelago anchored here.

Historical Notes

The following translation from 'Bahasa' to 'English' preserves the HTML tags: "The port is located at the mouth of the Ciliwung River. Portuguese reports mention that this port used to stretch for one or two kilometers on both sides of the Ciliwung River. According to those records, the Ciliwung River could accommodate 10 merchant ships, each with a capacity of about 100 tons."

Historical Notes

In 1817, the Netherlands expanded this port to 1,825 meters. In the following years, Sunda Kelapa Port continued to be expanded to accommodate more ships. After the independence era, Sunda Kelapa Port was rehabilitated again, resulting in a canal that is 3,250 meters long and can accommodate 70 sailboats with a betel nut stacking system.

"Strategic Location"

translation

Pelabuhan Sunda Kelapa dulu jadi pintu masuk Kerajaan Pajajaran

The Sunda Kelapa port used to be the entrance to the Pajajaran Kingdom.

The following 'Bahasa' text has been translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "The Arab merchants became one of the groups that stopped by and settled on this coastal outskirts. In addition to trading, these merchants spread Islam in Betawi Land.

The Arab Islamic community was later shifted by the Dutch to a village called Pekojan - now part of West Jakarta.

The remnants of the past Islamic spread can still be seen around that area. Many old mosques that were built still stand to this day. Just mention Masjid Al Anshor, Masjid An Nawier, and Langgar Tinggi."

Because of its strategic location, the sea port became a coveted territory. On August 21, 1522, the King of Sunda made an agreement with the Portuguese to counter the attacks of the Sultanates of Demak and Cirebon, which had embraced Islam. The Portuguese were allowed to build a fortress in the harbor.

Kesultanan Demak's beard caught fire. The agreement was considered a threat. Fatahillah was sent by Demak to expel the Portuguese and seize Kalapa. On June 22, 1527, the Demak and Cirebon forces captured the Port of Kalapa. The name was changed to Jayakarta. That date is also commemorated as the anniversary of the city of Jakarta to this day. The Demak's power in Jayakarta finally collapsed. After on May 30, 1619, Jayakarta was captured by the Dutch under the leadership of Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Jayakarta was changed to Batavia. The name was taken from the Celtic tribe that once lived in the Netherlands.

"Start Receding"

In the mid-1800s, the Sunda Kelapa Port was no longer crowded. There was a silting up in the port. As a result, ships could no longer dock. Goods carried by large ships had to be transported by small boats to the mainland. As a replacement, the Tanjung Priok Port was built, located fifteen kilometers to the east.

In 1942, when Japan ruled, the name Batavia was changed to Jakarta.

Two years later, when the Netherlands regained control, the name remained unchanged. It was only in the 1970s that the government changed the name of the port to Sunda Kelapa.

Today, Sunda Kelapa Port is still functioning. Many wooden ships dock here, carrying various needs of the society, from groceries, wood, to fabric.

In addition to being busy with business activities, Sunda Kelapa Port is also a worthwhile maritime tourist destination.
