Dream - Apart from children, women are among those who suffer from Israeli military attacks on the Palestinian territories. With the increasingly alarming condition in Gaza, women have to struggle to protect themselves and their families. Those who have to flee must endure difficult days. Especially the supply of basic needs, including clean water, is blocked by Israel. According to Al Jazeera, the overcrowded conditions in the shelters, and the lack of access to water and menstrual hygiene products such as sanitary pads and tampons, force women to consume Norethisterone tablets. These pills are usually prescribed for conditions such as severe menstrual bleeding, endometriosis, and excessive menstrual pain.
Dr. Walid Abu Hatab, an obstetrics and gynecology medical consultant at Nasser Medical Complex in the southern city of Khan Younis, said that the tablet maintains a high level of progesterone hormone to prevent the uterus from shedding its lining. As a result, menstruation, which usually occurs every month, is delayed.
Swallowing the pill is not entirely without risk. According to medical professionals, women who consume this pill must face side effects such as irregular vaginal bleeding, nausea, changes in menstrual cycle, dizziness, and mood swings. However, women in Gaza have no choice. They still swallow the pill amidst the risks of the Israeli aid blockade and the relentless bombings carried out by the Zionist army.
One of them is Salma Khaled, who left her home in Tel al-Hawa two weeks ago. Salma is currently forced to live in a Deir el-Balah refugee camp, Central Gaza. Salma said that she is constantly in fear, discomfort, and depression, which has a negative impact on her menstrual cycle.
"I have experienced the hardest days of my life during this war," said Salma. "I had my period twice this month - which is very irregular for me - and experienced heavy bleeding," she added.
Salma admitted that there were no sanitary pads available in several open stores and pharmacies. Since the Hamas attack on Israel broke out on October 7th, it has been almost impossible for pharmacies to supply their warehouses with medical supplies. Not only that, access to clean water in the conflict area is almost impossible. The use of bathrooms has to be rationed and limited to only a few days.
Without the means to regulate her menstruation as usual, Salma decided to try to find pills to prevent menstruation. When sanitary pads were harder to find, menstrual delay tablets were more available in several pharmacies because they were rarely used. "I asked my daughter to go to the pharmacy and buy menstrual delay pills," said Salma. "Maybe this war will end soon and I won't need to use them more than once," she added, who was also concerned about the side effects of the pills on her body.
Not only that, another suffering of women in Gaza is a number of mothers who are forced to give birth through caesarean section without anesthesia or sedation. This warning was conveyed by the international charity organization ActionAid amidst Israel's intense bombing in the Gaza Strip.

The situation in hospitals in northern Gaza, according to ActionAid, is very critical. Al-Quds Hospital and Al-Shifa Hospital are said to no longer receive any aid supplies. "The chaos and horror happening in Gaza have a negative impact on women," said Soraida Hussein-Sabbah, a gender specialist and advocate for ActionAid based in Ramallah. ActionAid also expressed concern about the lack of clean water and poor hygiene conditions contributing to the increase in diseases, as well as a serious decline in living conditions throughout the Palestinian territories. "The little aid that trickles into Gaza barely touches the humanitarian crisis that is happening," the group said.
