Dream - Dream friends who love reading already have plans for this weekend? If not, the Indonesia International Book Fair (IIBF) can be your choice for spending time this weekend. You can invite all family members or friends to hunt for favorite books that have been coveted for a long time. IIBF is an annual event held for the 43rd time by the Indonesian Publishers Association (IKAPI). Carrying the theme "It's time to read!", IIBF was officially opened by Muhammad Neil El Himam, M.Sc., Deputy of the Creative Economy and Digital Products Sector of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia on Wednesday, September 27. This event will be held until Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Hall 1 of the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City, Tangerang.
The Chairman of the IIBF 2023 Committee, Mappa Tutu, in the opening ceremony of IIBF 2023 yesterday, stated that IIBF 2023 is an event held offline since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Indonesia. Book publishers gathered together with book enthusiasts to greet the community of knowledge lovers through their creative works.
Not only presenting a variety of books that can be owned by book lovers, IIBF also offers various events such as discussions and book launches, author meetings, Kalap Zone, literary tourism, literacy community performances, and cosplay that will enliven IIBF. In addition, Indonesia Rights Fair, which is a copyright transaction event, will also be held for three days with the participation of more than 60 publishers/literary agencies from 15 countries.
"One of the attractions at this year's IIBF, added Mappa, is the presence of the Guest of Honor, which is a delegation from Korea known for having a strong reading culture and publishing industry. 'Korea presents various events such as calligraphy performances, poetry readings, meetings with Korean authors whose works are read by millions of readers, and cultural performances,' he explained."
Attended by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Park Soo-deok expressed his appreciation and happiness for being invited as an honored guest at IIBF this year. Park Soo-deok conveyed that the IIBF event is special because it coincides with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Indonesia.
"Since establishing a relationship in 1973, Korea and Indonesia have not only cooperated in the economic field, but recently cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries have become more active through the Korean wave (hallyu)," said Park Soo-deok. Soo-deok continued, "The Korean delegation will introduce Korean publishing culture and books through books translated into Indonesian. We are bringing bestselling authors, calligraphy experts, book cover designers, and webtoon writers directly from Korea to communicate directly with Korean literature fans in Indonesia," he added.
Kang Byung In, a famous Korean calligrapher, also participated in the opening of IIBF 2023 with an art performance of creating calligraphy using tools and materials brought directly from Korea. Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ikapi, Arys Hilman Nugraha, said that the book exhibition is one of the efforts to provide wide access to reading materials. This event is also a significant effort to keep the nation reading and maintain sanity amidst the onslaught of digital media in the form of entertainment and other distractions.
"Based on that foundation, the presence of IIBF becomes relevant to the nation's efforts to improve literacy rates. Only with a high literacy rate, a community can digest information for the improvement of their quality of life," said Arys.
In addition to the hope of further cultivating love for books and reading, Arys added, IIBF also aims to become a place and connector for all stakeholders in the book ecosystem, namely publishers, readers, writers, government, and anyone involved in the book industry.
"In the opening of IIBF, the Ikapi Awards ceremony was also held. This award has been regularly organized by the Indonesian Publishers Association since 2010. Ikapi Awards is a form of care and appreciation from Ikapi to writers, literacy activists, and book industry professionals who play a role in driving the publishing industry in Indonesia. Ikapi Awards 2023 will present awards for four categories, namely Writer of the Year, Book of the Year, Literacy Promoter, and a new category, Children's Book of the Year."
- Writer of the Year: Maya Lestari Gf - Book of the Year: Insecurity is My Middle Name by Alvi Syahrin - Children's Book of the Year: Kejutan Kungkang (Andina Subarja) - Literacy Promoter: Roosie Setiawan (founder of the Read Aloud Indonesia community)
