Dream - A famous mukbang content creator from China, Pan Xiaoting, suddenly passed away while live streaming on Sunday, July 14, 2024. He suddenly died allegedly due to excessive eating. Apparently, at that time he was participating in an extreme eating challenge, which was to eat continuously for more than 10 hours and broadcasted live every day, as quoted from China News. Each time he participated in the challenge, he tried to eat more than 10 kilograms of food.
The case of Pan Xiaoting has shocked social media, especially content creators who specialize in making mukbang videos, or eating large portions of food. Many netizens have been discussing on social media about the regulation of the live industry, particularly the dangerous mukbang content created by content creators that can harm one's health.
"Interested in Becoming a Mukbang Celebrity"
According to China News, Pan Xiaoting used to be a waitress. Then she became interested in becoming a mukbang content creator after seeing her friend make a lot of money from that activity. "Pan was a waitress when she became interested in becoming a mukbang host after seeing her classmate make a lot of money," wrote the report on China News website.
Actually, this mukbang trend originated from South Korea. Mukbang content creators will consume a large amount of food while interacting with their audience. Initially, Pan only consumed a few kilograms of food. Over time, he increased his portion to 10 kilograms and even more.
"Live Every Day"
Pan does live streaming every day for more than 10 hours. As the days go by, the audience keeps growing and even receives gifts through his live broadcasts. Seeing his habit, Pan's parents once told him to stop going live by saying that the money earned is not worth the harm his body experiences.
He does not listen to his parents' advice by saying that they don't need to worry. Pan insists on taking the risk to earn a lot of money as a mukbang celebrity.
"Ever Treated at a Hospital"
Pan suddenly lost consciousness when the live broadcast was not the first time. He has also been treated at the hospital for gastric bleeding due to excessive eating for the sake of his live and social media content. Although he has been treated at the hospital, he did not learn his lesson and returned to overeating one day after being discharged from the hospital. At that time, the viewers seemed worried and advised him to stop eating so much. However, reports mentioned that he ignored the warnings from his viewers.
Severe Stomach Damage
The sudden death of the mukbang celebrity shocked many people. Especially among fellow mukbang content creators. An autopsy was conducted on Pan's body to determine the exact cause of death. The autopsy results revealed severe damage to the stomach organ. There were even many undigested foods in his stomach. This incident serves as a stern warning for content creators not to neglect their health in pursuit of money.
