Dream - Bubur Suro is one of the traditional Indonesian foods that is very distinctive, especially in Java. This porridge has a special meaning in Javanese culture and is usually served during the celebration of Islamic New Year or 1 Suro (Muharam).
According to the indonesia.go.id website, Bubur Suro has been made traditionally among the Javanese community. According to Javanese cultural observer, Arie Novan, bubur suro is a symbol of gratitude to God for the blessings received. Bubur suro has been around since Sultan Agung's reign in Java.
"Supposedly, this has been around since Sultan Agung ruled in Java, regardless of whatever it is, of course, this Suro porridge is a reflection of the Javanese people's gratitude and blessings bestowed upon them by Allah SWT."
said Arie Novan quoted from the website indonesia.go.id.
The Salvation of Prophet Noah from the Great Flood
"While from other sources it is explained that bubur suro is usually offered to commemorate the safety of Prophet Noah from the great flood. This source can be seen in the book Nihayatuz Zain (Syekh Nawawi Banten), Nuzhalul Majelis (Syekh Abdul Rahman Al-Usfuri), and Jam'ul Fawaid (Syekh Daud Fatani)."
In the book, it is told how the porridge of suro was formed. Initially, Prophet Noah was asking his companions if there was any food left in the ship.
"The friends said that the remaining ingredients are only kacang poi, kacang adas, ba'ruz, flour, and kacang hinthon. From these ingredients, a delicious food called yaki bubur suro is created. Regardless of its origin, this bubu suro is still preserved until today. Just like in East Java, Central Java, and Yogyakarta. 'Nowadays, it is not only mentioned earlier, Bubur Suro is sometimes distributed en masse in several mosques in Java Island,' explained Arie."
"Composition and Philosophical Meaning"
Bubur Suro is made from ingredients that have symbolic meanings. Here are the main ingredients and their meanings: White Rice symbolizes purity and sincere intentions in living life. Lauk Pauk dishes (usually chicken and eggs) symbolize togetherness and harmony in family and society. Spices such as shallots, garlic, and turmeric symbolize strength, health, and bravery. Additionally, some people also add various types of nuts and grains, each with their own symbolism such as prosperity, perseverance, and patience.
"Symbol of Togetherness and Gratitude"
"Bubur Suro is not just food, but a symbol of togetherness, gratitude, and hope for a better future. This tradition is still preserved by many Javanese communities to this day, as part of a cultural heritage filled with meaning and noble values. Bubur Suro teaches us the importance of preserving ancestral traditions and culture as the identity of our nation."
