"China Senior Banker Sentenced to Death for Receiving Rp2.4 Trillion Bribe"

"Dream - The court in China has sentenced former senior banker named Bai Tianhui to death penalty for being proven guilty of accepting bribes worth more than 1.1 billion yuan (US$151 million) or around Rp2.4 trillion on Tuesday, May 28, 2024."

According to Wionews website, Bai is the general manager of China Huarong International Holdings (CHIH), who has been sentenced by the Tianjin Intermediate People's Court. The court found that Bai used his position to facilitate the acquisition and financing of projects in exchange for bribes.

"The court also permanently revokes Bai's political rights and orders the seizure of all his personal properties."

The court considers the scale of bribery and the social impact of his crime too heavy to receive a lighter punishment.

Although the punishment has been determined, it is currently unknown whether Bai plans to submit a defense or appeal.

Legal experts suggest Bai to appeal his sentence, citing precedents where similar offenses received lighter punishments, such as the case of Zhang Zhongsheng. Zhang received a bribe of 1.17 billion yuan and was initially sentenced to death but later had his sentence commuted to life imprisonment after filing an appeal.

The death penalty in corruption cases is actually rare in China, especially ones that are not suspended. Bai is the second official from Huarong, China, to receive such a punishment.

In January 2021, Lai Xiaomin, former chairman of China Huarong Asset Management (CHAM) and former superior of Bai, was executed after being found guilty of accepting bribes totaling 1.79 billion yuan (US$247 million). He also embezzled state assets and engaged in same-sex marriage. Four other senior executives from Huarong, including Wang Pinghua and Qin Ling, are awaiting trial on corruption charges.
