Dream - Apple continues to improve the durability of the iPhone every year, starting from using stronger body materials to more crack-resistant glass. To ensure the durability and water resistance of their latest phone, Apple conducts various rigorous tests to assess the strength of the iPhone.
A YouTuber named Marquees Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, was recently invited by Apple to visit one of their laboratories. In this laboratory, there are various advanced machines used to test the durability of iPhones before they are released to the market. That's why MKBHD shared some short videos on X that show the behind-the-scenes process of how Apple tests water resistance (IP rating), drop resistance (drop test), and vibration resistance on iPhones.
"Recently I had the opportunity to visit several Apple laboratories where they conduct durability testing on new iPhones before they are launched, and I learned a few things."
write MKBHD in the caption of the post.
MKBHD explained about IP rating testing for the iPhone. He mentioned that there is a special room used to test the water and dust resistance of the iPhone. To test water resistance alone, Apple goes through four different processes, namely: 1. First, a rainwater test is conducted by placing the iPhone under a special device that drips water like rain, but without pressure. 2. Next, a low-pressure jet spray is performed using a special device that sprays water onto the iPhone from all directions.
3. In addition, high-pressure water sprays are carried out using a fire hose. 4. Then, the iPhone is tested by submerging it underwater with additional pressure for a few moments.
Not only that, the YouTuber also showed that Apple uses specially designed robots to drop iPhones from certain heights and angles, with the process recorded by high-speed cameras. Apple technicians can then analyze the slow-motion footage to further understand how the iPhones fall.
In the latest video shared by MKBHD, they demonstrate vibration testing for the iPhone. In this test, several iPhones are placed on a plate programmed to vibrate at a specific frequency using a computer.
Vibration testing is designed to simulate the use of the iPhone in everyday situations, such as when used while riding a motorcycle or traveling on the subway. Although the durability tests conducted by Apple are not as rigorous as those conducted by YouTubers like JerryRigEverything, Apple performs testing on a much larger scale. They often test more than 10,000 iPhones before releasing them to ensure their strength and durability.
