"Already Retired but Still Not Enough to Buy a House, Here are 5 Reasons Workers Consider the Tapera Program Impossible"

"Dream - President of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (KSPI), Said Iqbal, considers the People's Housing Savings Program (Tapera) implemented by the government through wage deductions for workers to be inappropriate to be implemented at this time."

Retired but Still Not Enough to Buy a House, Here are 5 Reasons Why Workers Consider the Tapera Program Impossible

Said explained many reasons that caused the Tapera savings program to receive negative responses from various parties, especially companies and employees. The first reason for rejection is the lack of clarity regarding the Tapera program, especially the certainty that workers and Tapera participants will automatically get a house after joining the Tapera program. If it is still forced to proceed, KSPI is concerned that this policy will ultimately harm workers and Tapera participants.

"In terms of common sense and mathematical calculations, the Tapera contribution of 3 percent (paid by employers 0.5 percent and paid by workers 2.5 percent) will not be sufficient for workers to buy a house upon retirement or when laid off."

"ungkap Iqbal dikutip dari Liputan6.com, Kamis, 30 Mei 2024." translates to: "Iqbal revealed as quoted from Liputan6.com, Thursday, May 30, 2024."

Iqbal said, the average wage of Indonesian workers currently is around Rp3.5 million per month. If deducted by 3 percent per month, the contribution is approximately Rp105,000 per month or Rp1,260,000 per year.

Because Tapera is a social savings, then within a period of 10 years to 20 years in the future, the accumulated money is Rp12,600,000 to Rp25,200,000. "The big question is, will there be a house price of Rp12.6 million or Rp25.2 million in the next 10 years or 20 years in the future? Even if the business profit from the Tapera social savings is added, the accumulated money will not be possible for laborers to own a house," he complained.

Based on the calculation, Said Iqbal added that owning a house with Tapera dues is impossible.

"So with a 3 percent Tapera contribution aimed at enabling workers to own a house, it is simply impossible for workers and Tapera participants to own a house. Not only burdening workers' monthly wage deductions, but also in retirement or during layoffs, they still cannot own a house."

"urainya" translates to "the explanation."

The reason for the rejection of Tapera, which burdens workers and the people today, is that the purchasing power of workers has decreased by up to 30 percent in the past 5 years. The cause is that workers' wages have not increased for almost 3 consecutive years, and the increase this year is relatively small. If the wages are deducted by 3 percent for Tapera, the burden of workers' livelihood is guaranteed to be even heavier, especially since the contribution deduction for workers is five times higher than the deduction for employers.

"Furthermore, he assessed that the Tapera program is not being implemented correctly at the moment as long as there is no contribution of premiums from the government, similar to the premium assistance program in the Health Insurance program."

Meanwhile, the last reason, the Tapera program seems to be forced only to collect funds from the community, especially funds from workers, civil servants, military/police, and the general public. "Do not let new corruption prevail in Tapera as happened in Asabri and Taspen. Thus, Tapera is not properly implemented before there is close supervision to prevent corruption in the Tapera program," concluded Said Iqbal.
