Dream - The court in Vietnam has sentenced real estate tycoon Truong My Lan to death for her involvement in a financial fraud case worth US$12.46 billion or approximately Rp200.161 trillion (exchange rate Rp16,064 per US$).
"Truong My Lan, the chairman of real estate developer Van Thinh Phat Holdings Group, was declared guilty of embezzlement, bribery, and violation of banking regulations at the end of the trial in Ho Chi Minh City's business center."
According to CNN, this case has become the country's largest financial fraud case. The trial started on March 5, 2024, and ended earlier than planned.
The conference is one of the dramatic outcomes of the anti-corruption campaign to be eradicated, which has been promised by the ruling Communist Party leader, Nguyen Phu Trong.
"We will continue to fight to see what we can do,"
a family member said to Reuters, who spoke without mentioning their name. Before the verdict, they said Lan would appeal against the sentence.
Lan has pleaded not guilty to charges of embezzlement and bribery, said Nguyen Huy Thiep, one of Lan's lawyers, to Reuters.

Vietnam imposes the death penalty primarily for violent offenses but also for economic crimes. Human rights groups say that they have executed hundreds of prisoners in recent years, mostly by lethal injection.
The newspaper Thanh Nien reported that 84 defendants in this case received sentences ranging from three years probation to life imprisonment. Among them is Lan's husband, Eric Chu, a businessman from Hong Kong, who was sentenced to nine years in prison, and his nephew, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Source: SCMP
