Dream - PT KAI Commuter (KCI) proposes an increase in the Electric Train (KRL) Jabodetabek tariff. The proposal, which is currently being discussed by the Government, is made because the transportation fare that is widely used by the residents has not changed since 2016.
Director of Operations and Marketing of KCI, Broer Rizal, said that the company is still waiting for the government's decision, namely the Ministry of Transportation as the regulator, to increase the tariff of KRL Jabodetabek.
"He said, quoted from Merdeka.com."
The current applicable KRL fare is Rp3,000 for the first 25 kilometers (Km). Passengers will be charged an additional fare of Rp1,000 for each subsequent journey of 10 Km.
At the end of 2022, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya once said, in order for the commuter train passenger fare subsidy to be targeted accurately, an appropriate scheme is needed.
The way is by issuing new cards that are issued to differentiate the profiles of commuter train passengers, including the implementation of increased train ticket prices specifically for economically capable individuals. Until now, commuter train fares have still been subsidized by the government.
Dirjen Perkeretaapian Kemenhub Risal Wasal explains that passengers in the capable category will pay according to the original price of the KRL. This means that the fare for capable passengers can reach Rp10,000 - Rp15,000.
Member of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Toriq Hidayat, said that the increase in KRL commuter line fares by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) will result in greater social and economic inequality. "The increase in Jabodetabek KRL fares will have a significant impact. Especially for low-income communities. The fare increase can further burden their economy. And this can also result in greater social and economic inequality," said Toriq.
Toriq asserts that the tariff increase is not in line with the economic conditions of the society, especially in the post-pandemic period and the accompanying economic uncertainty. In the past few months, he said, the prices of basic commodities have continued to skyrocket. "We know very well that after the pandemic, the community is forced to allocate the majority of their income only to meet basic needs. The tariff increase will only add to their economic burden, especially for those who rely on public transportation every day," he added.
