Dream - Various ways are done by people to maintain their health. One of the most popular is not eating heavy meals after 8 PM. This rule is believed to reduce the risk of a bloated stomach and maintain stable blood sugar levels.
Then is the rule "not eating after 8 pm" really good for health?
Actually, there is not much research on the effects of not eating after 8 pm on overall health, but nutritionists strongly recommend not having a heavy meal before bedtime.
"When someone consumes food at night, the food tends to consist more of processed food high in carbohydrates and fats compared to carefully planned and balanced meals," said Janese S. Laster, MD, an internal medicine doctor, obesity medicine specialist, gastroenterologist, and nutritionist, as quoted by Health.
He explained that meal timing can affect digestion, absorption, and metabolism, which ultimately impact body weight. A study in 2022 supports this.
Researchers have found that eating at night increases participants' hunger, decreases the amount of calories they burn, and leads to greater fat storage. According to Laster, these effects may be unique to each individual based on food type, genetics, stress levels, and other factors. In addition to its impact on weight gain, late-night eating can also have negative effects on digestion.
"\u201cEating before sleep or lying down significantly increases GERD or acid reflux, so for this reason I do not recommend it,\u201d said gastroenterologist expert Caroline Soyka, DO."
"Is Eating After 8 PM That Bad?"
Sometimes busy activities do not allow us to eat early. Fortunately, eating after 8 pm may not have such a bad impact on health. "Although there is evidence linking late-night eating to potential health problems such as poor digestion, weight gain, and other issues, this may not necessarily be true for everyone," said Julie Pace, RDN, nutrition expert and founder of Core Nutrition Health and Wellness.
According to a study in 2015, the negative impact of dinner may not be consistent if the portion is small, nutrient-dense, or low in calories.
"\u201cIf we eat leftover pizza, ice cream, or chips, whenever it is, that is not a healthy choice. On the other hand, if we choose fruits, vegetables, lean protein, or nuts, whenever it is, that is a healthy choice, providing lots of energy and nutrients for the body," said Pace.
