Dream - To go to outer space, a special costume is needed because there is no gravity there. The astronauts' clothing is custom-made with specific materials.
Last week, the NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration) training program successfully qualified the first Arab woman, who is also a hijabi, to fly into outer space.
Uniquely, the first hijabi graduate named Nora al-Matrooshi requires NASA to develop a strategy to allow the 31-year-old woman to continue wearing her hijab while wearing outer space clothing, including the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) shown in the previous page portrait.
"When wearing EMU, you wear a hat (communication equipped with a microphone and speaker), which of course covers your hair."
"ujar Nora." translates to "said Nora."
Although EMU consists of a head covering, the 'communication hat' requires Nora to remove her hijab first before wearing it together with other accessories.
"Whether I like it or not, NASA sewed a special material hijab that can be worn inside the EMU. "The fashion designer engineers finally sewed an emergency hijab for me, so I could wear it, put on the suit, then wear the communication cap, take it off, and my hair remains covered. So, I really appreciate them doing that for me," said Nora."
The following 'Bahasa' text translated to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Costumes with hijabs that have been made by NASA also make Nora ready and more confident to depart with her astronaut colleagues into outer space."
Before, Nora had dreamed of touching the surface of the Moon when she learned about the journey there with her teacher during school. She managed to achieve her dream at the age of 31. Nora also worked in the oil industry before being chosen as one of the two astronaut candidates selected by the United Arab Emirates Space Agency (UAESA) in 2021 to enroll in NASA's training program.
"Graduated Together with 11 Other People"
The NASA training successfully qualified 11 other individuals. One of them is Nora's colleague from the Emirates, Mohammad AlMulla. The graduates of the training, known as 'The Flies', have met the requirements for NASA's mission to the International Space Station (ISS), the Artemis launch to the Moon, and possibly flying to Mars.
"I want to push humanity further than ever before. I want humans to return to the Moon, I want humans to go beyond the Moon, and I want to be a part of that journey,"
