Dieticians are certified experts in food and nutrition who have received education in the field of food science, nutrition, and the impact of food on health. Dieticians are usually trained and undergo special certification to be able to provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy and counseling tailored to the problems and needs of patients. There are four main practice settings for dieticians, namely clinical (hospitals and clinics), food service management, community, and research.

Clinical dieticians work in hospitals or clinics to ensure the intake and nutritional support for patients. Food service management dieticians are responsible for overseeing the production of nutritious food to meet the food safety requirements of large organizations such as schools or military bases. Community dieticians aim to design and implement programs for specific communities, such as diabetes patients. Meanwhile, research dieticians operate within a research team to conduct nutrition-focused studies.

After obtaining this degree, a new nutritionist is allowed to provide medical nutrition therapy and nutritional care to patients. In addition to prescribing nutritional therapy, nutritionists usually oversee nutrition education programs targeting the general public.
