Dream - Covid-19 cases have surged again in neighboring country, Singapore since early May. It is estimated that around 280 people have had to undergo hospitalization due to Covid-19 in the past week.
Ong Ye Kung, Singapore's Minister of Health, recommends vulnerable groups such as the elderly to receive additional vaccines. In the previous week, there were 181 Covid-19 cases recorded. The number of positive Covid cases then increased to 250 cases per week in the week of May 5-11, 2024.
Facing the wave of Covid-19, the Singapore government is intensifying the booster vaccination, especially for the elderly. The Covid-19 vaccination team is deployed to travel to selected locations across the island. This operation will continue until June 28th.
Ong also urged citizens, especially the elderly, to start wearing masks again when traveling. "Get vaccinated once a year, especially if you are elderly," said Minister Ong.
In the past few weeks, the sub-variants of Covid-19 KP.1 and KP.2 have been spreading in Singapore. These two sub-variants account for more than two-thirds of the Covid-19 cases in Singapore.
On May 3, 2024, WHO implemented KP.2 as a variant of Covid-19 under monitoring. However, The Ministry of Health (MOH) or the Singaporean Ministry of Health stated that there is no indication that the Covid-19 variants KP.1 and KP.2 are more contagious than previous variants.
Ong said that this wave of Covid-19 is estimated to reach its peak by the end of June 2024. To address this, the Singapore Ministry of Health stated that 5,700 people have received additional vaccine doses.
"Even though this number is more than 3.5 times the number of people who received the updated Covid-19 vaccine doses in the period of 13-16 May 2024, Singapore's most vulnerable population no longer receives the latest Covid-19 vaccination. With each new wave, there is a higher risk for them to become severely ill if infected," said a spokesperson from the Singapore Ministry of Health.
