The difficulty of recognizing other people's faces, including family members, is a characteristic of prosopagnosia.
When meeting new people, the face becomes an important focus to distinguish between individuals. However, prosopagnosia, also known as face recognition disorder, becomes a barrier due to problems in the nervous system that make it difficult for someone to recognize and remember other people's faces. Information about this condition, including its definition, types, and causes, is available from various sources on (01/04).
Prosopagnosia refers to the difficulty in identifying other people's faces, including family members, possibly caused by congenital abnormalities, neurological disorders, or head injuries. This disorder is known as the inability to recognize or differentiate faces, caused by disruptions in the brain region responsible for recognizing and remembering someone's face.
Based on its causes, prosopagnosia can be divided into two types.
Prosopagnosia Acquired is generally caused by brain trauma, such as stroke or accidents. Patients will experience difficulty in recognizing or remembering other people's faces. Damage to the fusiform gyrus, a part of the brain responsible for facial memory, is the main cause of this disorder. As a result, a person has difficulty remembering other people's faces, but can still remember other information.
Prosopagnosia Developmental is a congenital condition that makes individuals have difficulty remembering and recognizing other people's faces since birth. Patients usually are unaware of their condition and often associated with genetic factors inherited within the family.
The general sign of prosopagnosia is difficulty in identifying the faces of close individuals, such as family and friends, without involvement of memory, vision, or learning problems.
In addition to difficulties in recognizing other people's faces, individuals with prosopagnosia may face challenges in recognizing their own faces in photos or in front of a mirror. They may have difficulty distinguishing faces from objects, experience disruptive anxiety, avoid social interactions, and exhibit symptoms of depression.
Prosopagnosia caused by congenital anomalies more often occurs in individuals with certain genetic conditions, such as: Disorders within the autism spectrum Asperger's syndrome Turner syndrome Williams syndrome
"In addition, factors that can increase the risk of someone developing acquired prosopagnosia include: Head trauma Brain developmental disorders Exposure to carbon monoxide Alzheimer's disease Dementia Brain tumors Lack of oxygen in the brain (cerebral hypoxia) Virus infection in the brain (viral encephalitis) Epilepsy Stroke"
