Not less than 7% of the adult population in the United States is reported to suffer from social anxiety disorder in a particular year. This disorder ranks second in the diagnosis of anxiety disorders, after specific phobias. Although researchers have not fully understood the causes of social anxiety disorder, risk factors such as a family history of similar disorders or traumatic social experiences can increase the risk of developing this condition.
Anxiety disorder is a recurring fear of humiliation, negative judgment, or embarrassment in social situations. Individuals experiencing this disorder feel extremely anxious, disrupting their daily activities or various aspects of life, including work or interpersonal relationships. People with social anxiety disorder may spend days being afraid to perform certain tasks or activities.
Researchers divide types of social disorders or anxiety disorders into two categories, namely:
Social Anxiety Disorder or Specific Social AnxietyThis category of social anxiety disorder is also known as specific social anxiety. Individuals who experience this disorder generally feel afraid of specific social situations, particularly in the context of speaking in public or performing in front of a large audience, such as during a presentation or acting in a drama.
Generalized Social Anxiety or Generalized Social Anxiety Disorder refers to a deep-seated fear of almost every social situation. This type of social anxiety disorder typically begins in early age and tends to be chronic and disruptive compared to specific social anxiety.
In general, individuals who experience social anxiety feel a high level of anxiety when they are in the midst of unfamiliar individuals, situations that can trigger anxiety include: Interacting with new people. Being the center of attention, such as giving a speech or having to talk about oneself in front of a crowd. Attending social events involving strangers. Going to parties. Eating in public places. Using public restroom facilities.
People with anxiety disorders may show various physical signs, including: - Flushed or blushing face. - Excessive sweating. - Body tremors. - Increased heart rate. - Stiff body posture. - Nausea. - Speaking softly. - Avoiding eye contact. Meanwhile, children with social anxiety disorders may show additional or different signs, such as crying, emotional outbursts, or refusing to participate in group activities, such as classes or social events.
When someone feels excessively anxious when interacting or being observed by others, it can indicate the presence of social anxiety disorder. Experts have not found the exact cause of social anxiety disorder, but they believe that certain factors play a significant role in its development.
One factor is genetic predisposition, which is often inherited from the family. In addition, personal experiences are also believed to have a significant influence on the occurrence of social anxiety disorders. Factors that may influence include the presence of anxious behavior role models from parents in social situations, as well as overly protective or harsh parenting styles. Disruptive social experiences during childhood, such as bullying or stressful public performances, can also be triggers for social anxiety disorders.
Reducing Anxiety: The goal of treatment is to reduce symptoms so that individuals can function better during stressful social situations. Two Treatment Approaches: There are two approaches that can be taken in addressing anxiety disorders, namely:
Psychological Therapy In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), individuals consult with mental health professionals to learn new ways to respond to anxiety-triggering situations. They are taught relaxation techniques to face social situations and are then asked to gradually apply them in their daily lives. Social Skills Training: Through this type of therapy, individuals practice interacting in social situations through role-playing, often in a group context.
Medical Treatment Antidepressants: Usually used for social anxiety disorders, antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are often prescribed. Beta-blockers: This medication helps control anxiety symptoms such as excessive sweating and rapid heartbeat. Benzodiazepines: A sedative medication that can provide quick effects, but can cause dependence if used continuously.
