Command to be Grateful in the Quran

Allah loves every servant who is grateful, no matter how small the blessings given to him.The blessings that are grateful will increase.On the other hand, if the blessings are denied, they will decrease.

Allah SWT also emphasizes to His servants to always be grateful.There are many verses in the Quran that convey the command to be grateful.One of them is in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 152:

"So remember Me, I will remember you.And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me." (QS.Al-Baqarah: 152)

The level of gratitude determines how pious a person is to Allah SWT. In that verse it means that a person who is pious will get a better place in His sight than a disbeliever.

In Surah An-Nahl verse 18, it is also mentioned about the command to be grateful for the blessings of life.

"And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

This verse explains that when someone is grateful, they will feel content and peaceful in their life.Different from someone who denies the blessings, they will always feel dissatisfied, lacking, and restless.

Hadith about Gratitude

Verses of the Quran about the command to be grateful are reiterated by the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.This shows how important it is to be grateful for the blessings of life for every Muslim and human being in general.By knowing the hadiths about gratitude, hopefully we can become Muslims who are able to be grateful for every breath we take.

The Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "The grateful eater is equal to the patient fasting person." (HR.Bukhari, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Ibn Hibban)

The above hadith shows that gratitude has a high degree in the sight of Allah, to the point of being equated with fasting and patience.It is often difficult to be grateful for blessings.However, by building the habit of gratitude, a person will be able to live this life with gratitude to the Creator.

Gratitude for blessings should not only be expressed in words, but also in actions.A hadith narrates that one way to be grateful for the blessings of time and health is to use them for good purposes.

"From Ibn Abbas, he said: The Prophet Muhammad SAW said: "Two blessings, many people are deceived by them, namely health and time." (HR. Bukhari)

Grateful Prayer for the Blessings of Life

If we are more aware and observant, there are actually many blessings and favors from Allah SWT to His servants.Countless blessings that Allah SWT gives to every creature.There are prayer practices that Dream Friends can offer as an expression of gratitude.Here is one prayer of gratitude for the blessings of life that can be practiced every day:

"Alhamdulillahi rabbil 'alamin hamdan yuwafi ni'amahu wa yukafiu mazidahu"

Meaning: "All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, praise that is commensurate with His blessings and guarantees their increase."

In addition to the above prayer, there are still other short prayers that you can make a daily practice:

"Allahumma a'inni 'ala syukrika wa husni 'ibadatika."

Meaning: "O Allah, help me to be grateful to You and to do good deeds for You." (HR.Muslim)

Grateful Prayer for Other Blessings of Life

"Ya ghaniyyu ya hamidu ya mubdi-u ya mu'idu ya rahimu ya wadudu, aghnini bihalalika 'an haramika wakfinii bifadllika 'amman siwaka"

Meaning: "O Rich One, O Praiseworthy One, O Creator of beings from the beginning, O Merciful One, O Loving One, enrich me with what is halal from what is haram, and suffice me with Your grace from the gifts of others."

"Rabbi aw zi’ni an-asykura ni’matakallati an’amta 'alayya wa'ala waalidayya wa an a'mala shaalihan tardhaahu wa adkhilni birahmatika fi 'ibadikash-shaalihiin."

Meaning: "O my Lord, inspire me to be grateful for Your blessings that You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds that You are pleased with; and admit me, by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants."
