Injectable Contraception Known to Increase the Risk of Brain Tumors in Women

- The types of contraception are quite diverse and one of the most popular ones is through injection or known as injectable contraception. This injectable contraception is a hormonal contraception to prevent pregnancy.

Quoted from Alodokter, there are two types of injectable contraception in Indonesia based on the timing of administration, namely 1 month and 3 months. The 1-month injectable contraception contains estradiol and medroxyprogesterone hormones.

Meanwhile, the 3-month injectable contraceptive contains only medroxyprogesterone. This content can inhibit the ovulation process and make cervical mucus thicker, making it more difficult for sperm to fertilize the egg. A study published in The British Medical Journal (BMJ) reveals the effects of using this hormonal contraception, which is associated with an increased risk of rare brain tumor. The long-term use of certain drugs containing progestogen hormones can increase the risk of meningioma - a mostly non-cancerous tumor - by up to five times.

From the progestogens included in this study, the only one used in England related to a higher risk of tumors is medroxyprogesterone acetate, a contraceptive injection available under the brand name Depo-Provera.

The following is the translation of the provided 'Bahasa' text to 'English' while preserving any html tags: "Data NHS/National Health Service in England shows that there are around 10,000 drug prescriptions every month in England. Long-term use for more than one year is associated with a 5.6-fold increased risk of meningioma. "Although this sounds like a very significant risk, it is important to be aware that meningioma is rare and a five-fold increase in a rare disease is still a rare disease," said Paul Pharoah, a professor of cancer epidemiology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center."

"Medroxyprogesterone Acetate Injection"

From research findings, around 40 out of 10,000 women who are currently 30 years old are estimated to be diagnosed with meningioma before they reach 80 years old.

The number increased to 200 in women who have used medroxyprogesterone acetate injections. "This small increase in risk needs to be considered in relation to the benefits of using injectable contraception," said Prof Pharoah. Progestogen is similar to natural progesterone hormone. It is used to treat gynecological conditions such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as menopausal hormone therapy and contraception.

New study published in The British Medical Journal uses data from the French national healthcare system on 18,061 women who underwent meningioma surgery between 2009 and 2018. Each case was matched with five women without meningioma - a total of 90,305 - based on year of birth and region of residence. Researchers found that long-term use of three progestogens is associated with a higher risk of meningioma.

"For medroxyprogesterone acetate (4.1-fold increase), promegestone (2.7-fold increase), and medroxyprogesterone acetate (5.6-fold increase)."

Other progestogens were examined by researchers from the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety, but it turns out they do not increase the risk. Because this is an observational study, researchers cannot determine whether hormone treatment is the cause of tumors. Scientists note that, with 74 million users of injectable contraceptives worldwide, "the potential number of meningiomas caused may be high" in countries where injectable contraceptives are frequently used. Further research using other sources of data is needed to better understand the risks.

"Although this research associates certain progestogen treatments with an increased risk of meningioma, it also demonstrates the safety of other progestogen treatments that have been proven not to increase the risk," said Dr. Karen Noble, from Brain Tumor Research. Source: SkyNews
