Dream - Swelling during pregnancy is normal. Usually, mothers experience swelling in the face, hands, and feet. This swelling condition is called edema in medical terms.
Not only during pregnancy, this edema still occurs in some mothers even after giving birth, perhaps lasting up to a week or more after giving birth.
Mother who undergoes a caesarean operation may also experience swelling around the incision wound. Swelling may be accompanied by pain or tenderness and can cause discomfort. What causes postpartum edema? The main trigger is that the mother produces more blood during pregnancy to provide nutrition and protect the baby and the mother's health. In addition, low protein concentration and blood dilution can cause low hemoglobin concentration and fluid accumulation.
During childbirth, not all excess blood can come out of the body. The combination of extra blood, hormonal changes, and fluid retention can cause post-pregnancy swelling. Sometimes, this can lead to a condition called pitting edema.
The postpartum edema symptoms are characterized by swelling in the hands and feet, which can be mild, moderate, or severe. In addition, the skin on the hands, feet, and other areas appears inflamed, stretched, shiny, and swollen. The skin sinks when pressed, and swelling can also affect the abdomen in addition to the hands and feet. There are five things that can be done by the mother to reduce swelling or edema after childbirth.
"If you eat properly, it is likely that your body will release excess fluids and provide a higher level of energy for the baby."
Eat protein-rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates. In addition, consume potassium-rich foods to support adequate nutrition and reduce swelling during postpartum recovery. Avoid processed foods as they contain sodium which can cause bloating.
Drinking excessive fluids will signal the body to release any trapped fluids within it. This may be very helpful in reducing swelling.
Make sure to maintain optimal hydration and frequently empty the bladder by drinking water.
Do exercise and light activities because they can help improve circulation and eliminate excess fluid from the body through sweat. Taking care of a newborn baby is also like exercise because it makes the heart pump efficiently. Before choosing a specific type of exercise, consult with a doctor first, okay.
Therapies such as acupuncture and foot reflexology can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Acupuncture can help rebalance internal energy and improve kidney function and circulation. Report by Aykaputri Amalia Rahmani / Source: MomJunction
