Dream - Gibraltar Airport is one of the unique airports in the world. The airport, with its first-class category, is the only airport in the world that is intersected by a highway. The road is commonly used by the public for commuting.
Construction of this airport is very unique. Not for seeking sensation. But because of limited land. Gibraltar is a territory bordering Spain, owned by England. With an area of only 6.8 square kilometers, it is certainly very difficult to build an airport. Therefore, it was built by cutting through a road named Winston Churchill Avenue with its super busy traffic.
The distance from this airport to the center of Gibraltar is no more than half a kilometer. Therefore, this airport is classified as the fifth most extreme airport in the world according to the History Channel.
Gibraltar is an autonomous British territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. The territory has been under British rule for over 300 years, since 1704. The territory was officially ceded by Spain based on the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. This airport was built during World War II. At that time, Gibraltar was an important naval base for the British. Therefore, this airport was built on a horse racing track. Later, the airport was opened in 1939 and initially only used as an emergency airport for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air.
As development progresses, the airport is expanded to reach the Strait of Gibraltar. In order to extend the runway, England dredged the sea at the edge of the coast of the Strait of Gibraltar. The stones were taken from the excavation carried out by the soldiers who were building tunnels during World War II at that time.
This agreement is made between Spain, England, and Gibraltar. The content of the agreement is: opening the airport for flights to and from Spain, which were previously prohibited due to tension with England.
Before this agreement, there were only three flights per day to Gatwick and Luton, and three flights per week to Manchester. This airport is often used by visitors and tourists traveling to or from the southern parts of Spain, such as Costa del Sol. The airport serves over 300,000 visitors per year, in addition to cargo aircraft. On busy days, the airport can accommodate up to seven flights, both departing and landing aircraft. The average road closure time is 10 minutes, but on certain days, the road crossing the runway can be closed for more than 2 hours.
In 2007, the local government planned to divert four highway lanes through a tunnel underneath the runway. The road, which was scheduled to be opened in 2009, has not been completed until now.
