Dream - Researchers say the Moon once had a magnetic core that helped generate a stronger magnetic field than Earth's current one. They believe the Moon's core, which is liquid and spinning at its center, has supported a magnetic field for at least one billion years. However, researchers are still puzzled. How the magnetic field is generated and when it ends. Is the process of forming the magnetic field the same as what happens on planets or not.
Throughout this time, scientists have believed that the magnetic field found in planets, such as Earth, is formed due to the fluid in its core. In Earth, the flow of iron in the core makes the Earth's center act like a dynamo, like a generator, which in turn produces a magnetic field.
The dynamo of the planet is produced by the induction process, where rotational energy transforms fluid into a magnetic field. "We recently inferred from magnetic studies of Apollo samples that the Moon also generates a dynamo in its liquid metal core," said Benjamin Weiss, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Our data indicates that, despite the Moon's small size - only 1 percent of Earth's mass - its dynamo is very strong [stronger than Earth's current magnetic field] and long-lasting, lasting at least 4.2 billion years ago until at least 3.5 billion years ago," he added.
Currently, the Moon indeed does not have a magnetic field. However, the moon rocks collected by astronauts during the Apollo mission indicate that the Earth's satellite used to have a magnetic field billions of years ago. However, scientists are not sure whether the Moon produces a magnetic field in the same way as what happens on Earth. Or perhaps the magnetic field generated on the Moon is formed by external forces.
For example, cosmic impacts on the Moon can trigger super-hot plasma that generates a strong magnetic field, as explained by the rocks collected by the astronauts.
In the review by Weiss and former MIT student, Sonia Tikoo, they believe that the dynamo mechanism forming the Moon's magnetic field is generated by the crystallization of a potential core that could maintain the Moon's magnetic field for billions of years. "The dynamo mechanism that can explain the strong intensity of the Moon's magnetic field is that the core is stirred by the solid mantle movement above it, analogous to a blender," said Weiss.
